Removal of vehicle numbers edit

Someone here has valiantly attempted and listed for some years the guesses at Table of Organisation and Equipment totals of vehicles in the manoeuvre, aviation, and artillery battalions for some years. Such information creates false impressions if listed in this way. It implies that somehow someone *knew* that *every* unit listed had its *full* number of vehicles theoretically assigned, actually present, on every day of 1989. This strains reality considerably!! TOE strengths of manoeuvre battalions in the late 1980s are a fully valid subject of study, but should not be presented in this fashion. The only listings that should be here for vehicle numbers are when there's a *specific* report that such-and-such a battalion has such-and-such number of vehicles present, and that should be referenced to a specific report, indicating a specific date of that report!! Thus I am in the process of removing all the numbers. I would greatly welcome editors writing long articles on the TOEs of the British, German, Belgian, U.S. and Royal Netherlands Army in the late 1980s. Buckshot06 (talk) 23:32, 4 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

3rd Panzer Division edit

Hi all, I'm in the midst of doing a mapping project where I show all the NATO units present in 1989, and I'm seeing an inconsistency between this page and historical information.

This order of battle seems to indicate that the West German 3rd Panzer Division is under the command of the I Dutch Corps in the immediate north of West Germany, in Lower Saxony. However, I have proof from both English-language and German-language sources that indicates that the 3rd Panzer Division was under the command of I German Corps as it should have been.

I would appreciate a more experienced editor than myself changing the location of 3rd PzDiv from under the Dutch Corps to under the German Corps. Thanks. JoeSolo22 (talk) 16:11, 15 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

3rd Panzer Division was under I German Corps during peacetime, but would have come under I Dutch Corps during war to screen the march of the Dutch divisions, which were (except for one brigade) based in the Netherlands. Once the three Dutch divisions would have arrived, whatever remained of 3rd Panzer would have, depending on the situation, either returned to I German Corps or remained with I Dutch Corps. As the article is about the wartime structure of NORTHAG the placing of 3rd Panzer is correct. noclador (talk) 18:11, 15 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
I was not aware of that as the German sources I consulted obviously placed 3rd PzDiv under I German Corps because it was peacetime. Makes sense, thanks for the clarification. Great work you're doing btw.
