Naming this figure as the rule of Loango in Dapper's time must be in error. The title itself indicates that the holder of this title was the Nganga Mvumbi, or guardian of the corpse of the king, a position which did not take on rulership like obligations until the late 18th century. Dapper's account makes it clear that the ruler when his reports were written was the king in the conventional sense, and not a guardian.
