As I understand it this is the common red ant in the UK and many other places. We really MUST get some more info written about this ant. Some diagnostics which will tell people that this is the little fellow they have in front of them. The common ant called the 'Red Ant' near where I live is not really red at all, it is an orangy colour and its called ''Myrmica Rubra''. I suspect that this one is what many people call 'Red ants' elsewhere in europe at least, since it is one of the most common european ants. IceDragon64 19:16, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Featured Creatures Publication edit
Although the link I just added is to a University of Florida Featured Creatures publication, Florida does not yet have this species in the state. We were fortunate that one of our Ph.D. students (H.A. Arevalo) graduated and obtained a job with the University of Maine working on that institution's European fire ant project. While there he authored the Featured Creatures publication I linked to from External Links. The other author is Dr. E. Gordon, chair of his department at UM and the head of that project. Dr. Arevalo is now back in Florida working for UF. He is a native of Central America, and he let me know that he had never experienced anything like Maine winters. Work to do edit
I propose to expand this article to get it a possible GA standard. The biology, distribution and behaviour has been properly studied, and there are dozens up dozens of published sources everywhere about this ant. I will first solve the citation issues.
