Talk:Museum of the Imperial Palace of Manchukuo

Title edit

The official English-language name of this place, according to the website, is 'The Museum of the Imperial Palace of "Manchukuo"'. Not sure if our MoS has a policy against quotation marks, because I've seen it in some other political titles, but "Manchu State" is an original translation that we shouldn't be making. It is incorrect to say that, '"Manchu State" is an original translation.' It is not. There was once an official English website, still linked from the article, that has now been deleted from the web. The words "Manchu State" are lifted from that. See the Wayback machine archive for evidence. That website also uses the words "Puppet Manchurian Palace" to describe the building prior to it becoming a museum.
Look at Wikipedia's naming conventions. Note that 'official names' are of no significance to how Wikipedia names articles. Instead we use the common name as used by reliable sources on the topic of the article. The sources give in the article itself are junk. Looking through Google books and scholar I find as many different names as there are books on the topic - though there are fair few books on the topic in English. Several of those alternative names are already listed in the article.
Personally I dislike "Manchu State" because it could be confused with the Qing or Later Jin dynasties which sometimes are referred to as such. "Manchukuo" is less ambiguous. I don't think we need quotes as only the wmhg.com.cn website uses that style. No other source puts quotes around that word.
