Talk:Museum of Old and New Art

General edit

I'm going to try to clean up this article a bit today. The museum is clearly notable, but information about it has been limited until the opening weekend (this weekend). There has been a fair bit of national media coverage today and yesterday which should help with sources. -- Chuq (talk) 21:18, 21 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Does anyone have any images to submit for this article? It's a spectacular site! -- User:Delapeople (talk) 18:20, 28 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Photos may only be taken for private use.... If you want to put mona photos (of the art - not the building) on here you'll have to get David Walsh's expressed permission! Wiki ian 13:15, 12 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
The museum may ask you to only take photos for private use but that does not necessarily mean you cannot post the photos here. If you take a photo of an artifact or artwork that is out of copyright then you may choose to publish it here. The issue of breaking the house rules on photography is a matter between the photographer and the museum and doesn't affect the copyright status of a photo. The Mona Brochure stipulates that all photos used for anything other than private use needs the expressed permission of Mona Wiki ian 05:52, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Are you required to take the brochure and agree before proceeding? Anyway, basically the risk is what remedies/damages the museum might seek. It is hard to know what that might be. Nevertheless you are allowed to publish the photos on wikipedia if you are willing to take the risk. Barrylb (talk) 12:04, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
You are in breach of copyright if you publish photos of the art without Mona's permission and they will be removed accordingly without said permission. I suggest you read Wikipedia's Copyright policy before proceeding with this matter, and pherhaps contact someone from Mona 03:31, 16 February 2011 (UTC)
This is not necessarily true. If they are in the public domain, there is some amount of risk but it is not in violation of WP:ART. You may, however, want to consider the potential loss of a museum-wiki collaboration in the future (cf. WP:GLAM). Ian, you seem to be very close to breaking "no legal threats" – watch what you are saying, please. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 03:35, 16 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Don't jump to conclusions Ed..... Where Did i Make threats against the organisation I've been helping for the past 5 years???? From my understanding of what I read at Mona (when considering myself whether to upload photos) only private use photos do not breach copyright. Please don't confuse my concerns with threats again, cheers. Wiki ian 05:34, 16 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

maybe I'm taking this too seriously.... I'll tell you the quote that caught my attention and you can all make up your own mind:

Still photography for personal use is allowed in the permanent galleries only. No flashes or tripods, please. No videos or photography may be reproduced distributed, sold or displayed on personal websites without our permission. - Mona Visitor Guide

Maybe I read into this wrong, but that is exactly what is says, and in all honesty to say that my concern has been confused with threats I find to be insulting. Wiki ian 05:45, 16 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

It doesn't matter what the museum says. If a piece of art is out-of-copyright then it is not possible to breach copyright by photographing it. The museum's "house rules" have no legal standing. Barrylb (talk) 22:50, 16 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Let me be facetious; if the out of copyright art work has an elaborate lighting, that could probably constitute a new copyright. And what of the background, like a patterned wall? People tend to protect themselves against inferior public representation of their creations and since my work has been subject to piracy I can understand it a bit. Andrew Lloyd Webber only ever allowed one small scene of his musicals to be videoed to keep control of what was out there of his stuff. In Europe 21 years ago we were not allowed cameras in. This is the modern world, consume what they present, otherwise full of restrictions, until something new happens.121.209.56.11 (talk) 04:29, 21 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
