The Bengali-speaking "nawab"-s of Bengal were not Turkish but of Arab descent. It is likely taht they had some Bengali and Afghan admixture. Their current descendants appear very similar to the general Bengali population.

Murshidabad District article edit

I removed the following information since there is already an article (now vs. 2006 comment) on Murshidabad District:

Murshidabad District

The district of Murshidabad - 2,062 sq mi (5,341 km²), population 5.863m (2001 census) - has its district headquarters at Baharampur. The district comprises two distinct regions separated by the Bhagirathi River. To the west lies the Rarh region, a high, undulating continuation of the Chota Nagpur plateau. The eastern portion, the Bagri, is a fertile, low-lying alluvial tract, part of the Ganges Delta. The district is drained by the Bhagirathi and Jalangi rivers and their tributaries. Rice, jute, legumes, oilseeds, wheat, barley, and mangoes are the chief crops in the east; extensive mulberry cultivation is carried out in the west. The district became part of the Gaur kingdom in 1197 and passed to the British East India Company in the 18th century.[citation needed]

Current MLA from Murshidabad assembly constituency is Bivas Chakraborty of AIFB, who won the seat in State elections of 2006. Chhaya Ghosh of FBL had won this seat in 2001, 1991, 1982 and in 1977. Independent candidate Mozammel Haque was MLA from this seat in 1996. Mannan Hossain of INC had won this seat in 1987.[citation needed]

This area can also be called as "Cow Supply Chain HQ of Bangladesh". Small farmers, mostly Muslims, and ironically some Hindus as well; sell the holy cows to Bangladeshi butchers by smuggling them into Bangladesh. It is estimated that 2 million cows per year are sent to death camps this way. Border Security Force (BSF) of India happily ignores the smuggling as long as they are bribed. If they are not bribed, a severe torture of such smugglers occurs.[citation needed]

I kept the information here in the event some of this information is not in the district article and can be moved there.--CaroleHenson (talk) 19:00, 26 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Dhuliyan City edit

This information looks as if it should also go in the Murshidabad District article -- or be the beginnings of an article about the city:

Dhuliyan City

Dhuliyan is one of the oldest cities of Murshidabad. There is lot of Bidi (Tobacco) company in Dhuliyan city and Aurangabad like Pataka Bidi, Shiv Bidi, Noor Bidi,Bazrang Bidi etc. Pataka Bidi company is famous in India. It has many sector like hospital, tea and Fmcg etc. Pranab Mukherjee is the President of India from Jangipur City of Murshidabad.[citation needed]

Murshidabad assembly constituency is part of Murshidabad (Lok Sabha constituency).[1]

Does Dhuliyan City warrant an article of its own? Or, should this be moved to the Murshidabad District article?--CaroleHenson (talk) 19:04, 26 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Pronunciation of "Murshidabad" edit

The given pronunciation is strictly British, and could be confusing to those who are not familiar with the exclusion of "r" sounds as being indicative of a British pronunciation. Perhaps a non-British pronunciation could be added, or it should be pointed out that the IPA is for British.69.113.151.63 (talk) 15:39, 1 May 2019 (UTC)corphoReply
