Untitled

Can someone update the shield image? The University rebranded about a year ago and that image is of the older shield. --irelandapaige

The shield shown is still the official version that is found in the university seal, and used for formal events, occasions, and purposes. The newer version, which is part of the "Your World to Explore" re-branding campaign, is used for general marketing and branding purposes, but it does not replace the traditional historical shield. Notable Faculty

Murray has some very notable faculty that should have a section on here. I remember reading that they have one of the top sports pyschologist in the nation. Mark Wattier is a political science professor who has done a great deal of writing on "Q" methodology in research. Mark Gottfried update

I simply changed his status to "former" Alabama coach, since he is no longer the head coach there.

The article sounds like something an HR department put together as a vanity article. It should be more factual without so much fluff.

• What article are you referring to as being filled with fluff? The article here for MSU is almost all facts. I don't see much fluff in there at all, so I'm not sure what your comment is directed it. Please provide more explanation.

Ideas

I think there should be something in the article about student events. Eamples: All Campus Sing, Step Show, Campus Light (the nation's longest running student produced musical), Mr. and Mrs. MSU.

There are also so many Campus Ministries (Wesley Foundation, Baptist Student Union etc.)

You can verify these events by contact student services.

That information isn't very encyclopedic. If there is something that's notable that sets MSU apart, it should be here. Otherwise, it belongs on MSU's site, not Wikipedia. cpritchett42 19:35, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Athletics

The NBA player, Popeye Jones, also attended Murray State, should be considered as a notable alumni in my opinion. groomsy57 16:12, 29 March 2006

Expansion

This article could use a good deal more information. There is a lot more to the university than the campus itself and the Athletic department (although it's hard to tell looking at where all the money goes). cpritchett42 03:59, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

Someone should go ahead and merge that MIFA article into this article I think. It would do fine as a subsection under Campus Life I believe.

Notable Alumni

I just noticed a revision that got me thinking. Did Chris Thile earn a degree from Murray? If so, then the degree and year need to be noted, otherwise it does need to specify that he attended but did not graduate. The same applies to all other alumni who do not currently have degrees and dates listed.

Fairness in MSU Policies

I am considering adding a section to this page stating that MSU is the only public University in the Commonwealth that has not added the term "sexual orientation" to its non-discrimination policy. It should also be noted that despite large amounts of support from students (SGA), faculty (Faculty Senate), and staff members (Staff Congress), the MSU Administration and Board of Regents refuse to even hear discussion on this topic. I do not want to add this section yet without submitting it for discussion, to avoid posting useless details to the article, and to potentially avoid a NPOV violation. --Antcjone 07:51, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

You've done well to discuss it here first. *hat tip* I do think it could be a borderline POV scenario. If it's a topic that you can cite a significant number of quality sources for, it might warrant inclusion, but as an alumnus, I'd rather see the existing article improved and expanded along more typical lines, such as the material mentioned below. Majors Unique to MSU

Another section worth adding would be one on the majors that MSU offers that are very rare, like OSH or Geographic Information Systems. Such majors are rare, and are almost unheard of at institutions of MSU's size. --Antcjone 20:17, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

So far, the majors (and minors) that I would think are worth noting as being rare include the following:

Occupational Safety and Health
Geographic Information Science (degree option)
Gerontology (minor)
Telecommunications Systems Management
Organizational Communications
Communication Disorders
Equine Science
Pre-Vet Program

These are the undergraduate majors and minors that I would identify as being either unique to Murray State or are a rarity amongst schools that are the size of MSU. If anyone has any other ideas for additions please post them here, as I will add this section soon. Also, any information about these majors/minors that makes them stand out as being even more unique would be greatly appreciated. --Antcjone 04:38, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

• I am going to be contacting the Department of Geosciences for information about starting an article for the Mid America Remote Sensing Center. Professor Hobo

I have gone back and edited the new Professor Hobo section for formatting and grammar. That section does need to be cited properly. I have tagged it as unsourced for now, until someone can add some sources to the section. --Antcjone 20:50, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

I propose to move this information to its own article. If the cartoon won an award, it might be notable enough to stand on its own, but if not, que sera, sera. If it proves notable enough to survive, it might merit a mention in the publications section, but to address it in such detail in the MSU article strays from the article's main topic. • There's some obvious POV in that section also that will need to be dealt with, and if we're going to mention Professor Hobo in the article, we're going to need to also add a section regarding the work of Darin Shock, who drew for The Murray State News from 1998-2001, because he gained far more attention and criticism. You also may remember that he earned nationwide attention when he was awarded first place in the Best Stand Alone Category in 2000 by the College Media Advisers judges.

• I agree that there are definitely some issues with the section. I only went back and fixed the huge issues such as the article text actually beginning with the subtitle and flowing into the text, as well as inappropriate word usage. There was a professer hobo page before but it was nominated for deletion two times and was finaly deleted yesterday. Before it was deleted I merged the two articles together. This section was copied from the original professer hobo page. That is also the source. I honestly do not feel that this needs to be listed under the MSU article. According to its AfD entry, it has been tagged for over a year for lack of sources, and at the moment it is still tagged as needing sources. A new article cannot be made from this information, even if it is a stub article. With a 2nd request for deletion on the article's page, obviously somebody wants it gone. I think the major issue is its lack of references, which is primarily why I believe that it should be removed form this article as well. Yamaka122, if you would like to find some sources that are verifiable for that section, then please post them.     • Let's give this section until Friday for adequate sources to be located. Considering there are 3 tags on that section, it is starting to become an eyesore. If sources can be found, then it should be moved into its own article. According to its AfD page, that is the primary concern that everyone seems to have for it being deleted as its own article. Disputed inclusion of Laura Sullivan-Beckers in new "Notable faculty" section

A new editor has tried to add the following paragraph to a new "Notable faculty" section of this article:

Laura Sullivan-Beckers, Ph.D. is an assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Murray State University. An evolutionary biologist, Dr. Sullivan-Beckers received national attention in 2019 for her discovery of a new species of tree hopper, Hebetica sylviae, which was published in the Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington. Dr. Sullivan-Beckers has been featured in numerous newspaper, radio, and television interviews including Good Morning America and Inside Edition.

I dispute this addition as it seems like it's a bit of recent news and not an indication of lasting importance for this person or institution. ElKevbo (talk) 23:45, 12 August 2019 (UTC)

Tend to agree. As someone who tries to monitor "notable natives" sections in articles about cities and towns, the guideline is usually that the person has, or could reasonably be expected to have, their own Wikipedia article. A successful rebuttal to ElKevbo (talk · contribs)'s objection might be to create a stand-alone article for Dr. Sullivan-Beckers and see if it survives. If so, she is presumably notable enough to include. If not, I question why we would include someone in this list of faculty who doesn't even meet WP:GNG or WP:NACADEMIC.
