Uh, if it's on a "purpose-built track", how's it still road racing, & N circuit racing? Trekphiler 04:48, 9 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Long distance riding

edit

Is there a place here (or on another page) to put a discussion of "long distance riding"? The page Long Distance Rider was recently created and I'm trying to find it a home to be linked to. Thanks, Witty lama 03:33, 8 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Completely overhauled article, comments, disagreements, etc (I'm an off roader so may not be as comprehensive as it could be). Pickle 18:25, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

edit

I would like to propose this page is moved (from Motorcycle racing) to something like Motorcycle sport as not all topics covered by this page (eg trials) are actually racing. any comments, disagreements, etc ??? Pickle 12:26, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

OK no comments yet so I'm being bold (as they say) and doing it Pickle 14:48, 18 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Lead Section

edit

The article looks good. You might want to edit the Lead Section as per Wikipedia:Guide to layout[23]. The subject of the article should appear in bold text and summarize the most important points of the article. You can see the Auto racing article as an example.

You should try to reduce the use of parenthsis and use of eg & ie. Also need to strive to make the article more newbie friendly. For instance, the Drag Racing Section mentions Santa Pod as an example. Most readers outside of the United Kingdom or those who have never read about motor sports will no doubt have any idea what or where Santa Pod is.Orsoni 09:21, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Cheers for the comments, this is still very much a work in progress article! Its at least better than how it used to be but by no means is there. I'm still fleshing out each individual sport (slowly), but i only really know about Enduros, MX and Trials, and can't really cover the overs effectively. Drag racing is a great example, i know very little about it, but Santa pod is an example and is better than having nothing down. I probably should put "this section is a stub" notes next to the bits i can't really cover. Pickle 14:22, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
It might be better not to reference any specific locations at all to save from confusing newbie readers. Unless it's a world famous locale such as Le Mans or the Monaco Grand Prix, most newbies will just be left scratching their heads.Orsoni 15:02, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Terrible writing style

edit

This is one of the most poorly-written articles I've ever read. The style, grammar, and punctuation are atrocious. It makes racers look like a bunch of dumb punks who can neither read nor write. Please help me in revising this poorly-written drivel. 71.1.247.103 04:07, 21 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Why thank you for your kind comments. I openly admit that despite my impressive education, i have miserable spelling, punctuation and grammar, thus i don't pretend to be infallible on these matters. You are more than welcome to "be bold" and change any of my "SPAG" (as they called it way back at GCSE) errors. As to weather the article is drivel, the same goes, expand it - i openly admit this is a work in progress that needs much added to it, I'm only compete in MX, Enduros and Trials, my grasp of the other two branches of the sport of motorcycling is limited. Pickle 21:10, 21 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
I myself know practically nothing about off-road racing. All I know about is road-racing, mainly MotoGP. Feel free to expand the article, and I'll take care of correcting spelling, grammar, etc. 71.1.247.103 20:37, 22 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for my earlier very sarcastic comments. Feel free to cover the tarmac side of things, even if its just top level road race. I'm getting around to writing the enduro section just a matter of time and inclination. BTW sign your comments by pressing tide "~" 4 times. Cheers Pickle 15:18, 23 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Name changed to Motorcycle Sport

edit

All the events covered in the article are competitive events. I also cannot find one sporting event (tours and such) mentioned or listed in the article. I'm wondering if a more accurate change form motorcycle racing would've been to motorcycle competition. What was the reasoning behind sporting instead of competition?--I already forgot 20:00, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Tourism as a sport

edit

Should motorbike tourism (FIM Rally and such events) be included in this article or would it be better to start the main article first? I'd personally prefer starting from this article and creating the main article as soon as it becomes better than just a sub here. It'd probably go under Tarmac subsection, although it should be mentioned that it's not restricted to tar. Telempe 08:50, 22 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've no problem adding touring at all ("Rally" is already mentioned under "Tarmac"), i presume its all the same sort of thing, although I've never been involved in one I'm familiar with the concept. "Motorcycle sport" is a broad church so no reason not too, if you have got plenty to say about it by all means create a main article, but if not this can serve as a stub. The Tarmac/off road section and its distinction is somewhat artificial with events like supermoto, long distance trials, enduros, etc being on both but its a useful starting point for beginners. Rally

edit

The description mentions navigational type rally, but the main article is the touring gathering definition of rallying with no evidence of a navigational type. As an unfamiliar reader of motorcycle sport, it's not clear. Rally Wonk (talk) 11:09, 11 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
