external link to MortgageCalculator.io was removed. it is a mortgage calculator that has lots of helpful info, is mobile optimized (not typical from many that I have used), and loads very quick. just figured it would be a good addition to the page. No prob if you don't think so. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tkjef (talkcontribs) 01:27, 15 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

External Links to CalculatorIQ edit

As suggested by Kuru I am adding a comment here.

I previously added a link to a SPAM LINK REMOVED that I'd created and Kuru suggested that it be added to the Yahoo Directory. It appears that it costs $299 to add it to the Yahoo Directory (correct me if I've misunderstood the 'Suggest a Site' part of the Yahoo Directory). That would imply that you should pay to have a page indirectly linked from wikipedia which is not what wikipedia is about. The Yahoo Directory appears to favor sponsored links at the top and on the side of its listing page. Again not an objective listing. For those reasons the Yahoo directory should probably not be linked to from this page under the External Links.

In the spirit of wikipedia the SPAM LINK REMOVED that I created:

  • Carries no advertising on the page.
  • Is not tied to any mortgage company or advisor.
  • Is for educational purposes.
  • Is interactive like the displays in a museum providing enhanced education. You can move the sliders and visually see how the different components that go into computing a mortgage will affect the payoff schedule and total interest paid.

So in consideration of placing a link to this calculator, I think that you need to ask yourself if someone who is trying to learn about this subject would benefit by using this calculator? You are completely correct about the Yahoo link - I presumed there was an open directory link here as there is in most of these situations. I concur that such a link (the yahoo one) is just as promotional as what we're trying to avoid. I've replaced it with the open directory link - I would propose that as a first stop. If there's a problem with getting a listing there, then we should discuss some way to weed out the thousands of calculators to place one or two examples here (I don't doubt the criteria would be very similar to what you've outlined above). Thank you for your understanding of the issues we have with this article. Kuru talk 00:52, 12 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

External Links edit

Does anyone know what the Wikipedia policy would be for external links of examples of mortgage calculators on the web? There are thousands of sites with mortgage calculators (almost all of them commercial) so on the one hand any specific link looks like link spam, on the other hand it seems deficient to not provide anything. Any ideas? Frikle 02:51, 14 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

You may purchase a mortgage calculator from calculated industries. That calculator is not bias toward any one mortgage company. [User:FXavier] 01:11, 09 November 2006

External link to our companies "Mortgage Calculator" edit

We put up a valid link to our "Mortgage Calculator". This link should not be removed since we are discussing how a mortgage calculator works, it is also imperative to show the general public a live sample of how a mortgage calculator works and operates. We will therefore be reinstating our link on the grounds that our link to a live working Mortgage calculator is essential, and increases the value of the wikipedia mortgage calculator definition. Any further suggestions, are most gratefully appreciated.

No thank you. There is currently a link to a directory of dozens of "examples". Even if we started including direct links, we would not include one overwhelmed with adcopy. Kuru talk 11:56, 17 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Mortgage Calculator Sample for Review. edit

Dear Kuru and All Admin,

Our Group at "Dtaj Group" have now throughly reviewed all of Wikipedia's Policy regarding external links, and we have removed all Google Adsense ads from our Mortgage Calculator. Please review below :

(link redacted)

Futhermore, the present link to Yahoo's list of Mortgage Calculators is in violation of Wikipedia's external links policies since most of these Mortgage calculators listed at yahoo's directory are of a "Commercial Nature".

It was and will always be our groups intent to provide increased content and functional examples to all wikipedia pages we contribute too.

Sincerly,

David McEachrane Dtaj Group —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ddiemails (talkcontribs) 12:58, 17 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Being a commercial link does not exclude it from being added to Wikipedia. However, you are now spamming the link in. Since it is your link, you shouldn't be adding it in the first place since you have a conflict of interest. Please stop adding it. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 16:49, 17 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Dear Gogo and Kuru,

Stop removing our link. It is valid and non commercial link. This is not spam. On the other hand the link to yahoo could have your commercial website on yahoo's mortgage calculator page which is definitly a conflict of interest. A conflict of interest can only occur if we are seeking a montary benefit by linking to our mortgage calculator. Our mortgage calculator is for information purposes only.

Thank You,

David McEachrane Dtaj Group —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ddiemails (talkcontribs) 19:44, 17 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

You have a conflict of interest because it is your site. Conflict of interest does not mean that there is monetary benefits. Please review the relevant guideline at WP:COI. While you are at it, I strongly recommend you read the Business' FAQ. Please stop adding the link. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 19:55, 17 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Independant Wiki Project regarding External link editing. edit

To All Admins,

Please be ware that recently we added some links to websites which had adsense advertising and some that did not have adsense advertising to see if there was any discriminating editing going on by admins for thier personal benefit. This small test by our group has found that some admin powers have been abused. Take this case for example .... "Amortization Calculator" has 1 external link to the following website:

Spam link removed

This website has a lot of adsense ads. Our Group (a bunch of lawyers) created an Amortization Calculator and put up some adsense ads. Both calculators produce the same results but the admins only deleted the new calculator. We can only conclude that some type of collusion is going on resulting in some type of monetary benefit.

We can not name any names, but want to warn all admins to be careful about how they edit external links. The results of our analysis will be forwarded to wikipedia management once complete.

Total Interest Paid Formula edit

I'm somewhat confused by this calculation. If we calculate the number of months (N) to repay the mortgage in full and multiply by the monthly repayment (c), we get the total repayments. Subtract the principal loan amount (P0) from the total repayments and you are left with the amount that was paid in interest.

What this formula appears to do (essentially) is define P0 in terms of P0. Please correct me if I am wrong and explain in the main article as I think the approach I describe is intuitively 'obvious' to most people and far easier to understand and calculate. The locster (talk) 00:48, 1 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

cyclotomic polynomial? edit

This article calls the polynomial 1+x+x^2+ ... + x^(n-1) a cyclotomic polynomial. It isn't unless n is a prime integer. Better to eliminate the part about cyclotomic polynomials and just give the closed formula for the expression. Wikipedia is a good source for cyclotomic polynomials.

Businsess calculator edit

I added a redirect from Business calculator as that is the usual name. Interest rate calculations are the same for mortgages and for other business related loans, and calculators like the HP12C and TI BA-II are sold as business calculators. It would seem to me more obvious to have a page on business calculator and redirect from mortgage calculator, though. Gah4 (talk) 02:31, 10 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
