UK Supermarket Competition Essay

I am doing an essay for my degree about competition in the UK supermarket industry. I am looking for people to comment on my work and help me find sources of information i.e. books and websites (would prefer websites) I need to some up in 2000 words what the competition in the last 20 and then 5 years of the industry was then what made it change etc. If any one has any help they can give at all please email me below (even if it just to recommend a good website)

Email: woodhousescotty@hotmail.co.uk

Thanks

Please email me at lawsonrob@lycos.co.uk with any specific questions about the Safeway/Morrisons merger and the history of Argyll.

As to merging the Safeway (UK) entry into Morrisons, this should not be done as we would end up skirting over 40 years of history of that brand in the UK.

Integrating Argyll into Safeway (UK) would make sense, go ahead

Pies

I shop at Morrisons a lot but I've never heard a bell ring to signify a fresh batch of pies is ready. Do they still do this?

The one I go to doesn't (and they still have the bell). Unless I miss it every time. 86.145.160.83 16:29, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

While it is still company policy to ring the bell, very few stores still do this, although technically they should do.

I work in the morrison in Beverley East Yorkshire and yes they do ring the bell most of the time.

I work in the pie shop at a Morrisons and we very rarely ring the bell, I think this is due to the fact that it was an ex Safeway store and during the conversion to Morrisons they opened the pie shop and at that time we didn't have a bell. Therefore we never got into the habit of ringing it plus the fact the ovens all have bells that go off when there is a batch of pies ready to come out of the oven.Kerryqueen 19:26, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

The bell is usually rung in the morning in most stores with first batch of pies and pasties. In the busy stores there are pies, pasties and sausage rolls coming out of the ovens almost constantly so it isn't really practical. Also once the store is busy there isn't much need or time to ring the bell. Pablo180 (talk) 14:55, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Trivia

"All new-build Morrisons stores include a clock tower, usually above the main entrance. This means that most former Safeway stores can be identified by their lack of this feature."

This does not make sense, as most of the existing Morrisons stores (i.e. non-new build) also lack a clock tower. AdorableRuffian 23:30, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

One built in 1994 has a clock tower, so maybe all Morrisons stores that started off as Morrisons have one. 86.145.160.83 16:31, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Any store built by Morrisons since the mid-1980s (ie. Most of the non-Safeway properties) has a clock tower. The only exceptions are long-established store such as Leeds city centre. Besides, it says 'most' former Safeway stores, not 'all'.
The Atlas Mills store which opened in Bolton in 1993 has no clock tower. It does have a tower, however. Tommyhaych 18:14, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Water Tannoy Scripts

Being an employee of Morrisons, I have noticed that at the end of November 2006 a new tannoy script has started. The gist of it is that if customers buy a certain brand of water, proceeds will go towards building water pumps in Africa that double as a children's playground. Is it my suspicious mind or is this a cynical ploy to try and get customers to buy more of this product (i.e. Buy this and you'll help the village and the children!"). Together with the recent energy saving drive is, this a change of policy of Morrisons towards ethical practices or merely an exploitation of customers guilt about the poor and the Earth? (And if you don't believe this, from the week commencing 20th November the Market Street staff are starting a new customer service drive!)

Disparaging remarks from Sir Ken?

The article cites this Brand Republic piece which contains an intriguing bit of info (emphasis mine):

Trouble also flared when disparaging comments relating to Southerners were attributed to chairman Sir Ken Morrison, which has hampered its aspirations to become a national brand.

Can anyone suggest what those "disparaging comments" might have been? I haven't managed to turn up anything via Google. 217.155.20.163 22:05, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

This is a picture of the laundry run by morrisons in Reigate. The morrisons is at leadt 4 times bigger. Just thought the photo was a little misleading. (I live in Reigate.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.8.163.182 (talk) 21:46, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

Fresh!?

I work at morrisons and very little of what theys sell is actually 'fresh', its freshly off loaded from the back of a lorry, but most stores in britain only bake bread, with everything else (including pies etc) brought in. Should this be mentioned? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.106.123.18 (talk) 00:15, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

No it shouldn't since it isn't verifiable information. -- xsamix (talk) 08:05, 08 May 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.232.240.160 (talk)

Famous Staff Contributions

Who is Ryan Nairn? Why is he famous? He doesn't have a page on wikipedia, I can't find anything concrete on who he might be by googling, so why does he (whoever he is) get a mention? BigTurnip (talk) 02:17, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Must've been vandalism, it's been reverted. Digifiend (talk) 10:22, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Picture of Morrisons Reigate Store

This picture is Morrison's dry cleaners, the actual store is a completely separate building off the left hand side of the picture. Most of what is in the picture is offices and the side of a Spanish tapas bar. BigTurnip (talk) 02:17, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Re-branding of Safeway

Why did Morrisons sell and re-brand all of the Safeway stores, instead of a partnership such as Wal-Mart and Asda? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.192.246.56 (talk) 16:53, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Probably because there's very little sentimentality in brand names in the UK supermarket sector as a whole - by way of example, a supermarket near me (in North East England) was originally Hintons (in the early 80s), then Presto (late 80s), then Safeway (early 90s), then finally Morrisons. You could fill a book with all the brand names that have disappeared or merged into others over the years, and Safeway is just one of many to add to the list.
And I'm sure the Asda name was kept because Asda is mainly a grocery chain, whereas Wal-Mart isn't a grocery brand. The same can't be said for Safeway vs. Morrisons, which sold largely the same types of product. 217.155.20.163 (talk) 22:44, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Because Safeway's went bust. It wasn't viable for Morrisons to partner with a company that had gone under, So Morrisons bought out all Safeway stores and converted them into Morrisons stores and M Local sites. 146.90.14.188 (talk) 17:29, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

The reference for Morrisons being Britain's fourth biggest supermarket chain is a number 2 which takes us to a web link which is an outdated reference. It must be, because if one looks at it, one will see that it still refers to Netto_(store). ACEOREVIVED (talk) 11:57, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

About Morrisons' financial performance

It was reported on news on Radio Four on January 7 2013 that Morrisons had declined in their financial performance over Christmas 2012. This could go in the section on the supermarket's financial performance to update the article - after all, Wikipedia is the most up-to-date encyclopaedia. ACEOREVIVED (talk) 21:09, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

I managed to find some information on the internet and added this to the article myself about the supermarket chain's performance for December (the Christmas period) 2012. It seemed more logical to put it where I had done than in the section "Financial performance" as that section heads a table - but if any disagrees, please feel free to change the position of the information that I have added. ACEOREVIVED (talk) 15:01, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

I would like to point out that Morrisons smashed their Christmas target by a long way. I don't get why its been reported that they had disappointing sales when they smashed their target across the company and totally outsold both Tescos and Asda combined from November 2012 to January 2013. This is also verified by the chart on the wall at the store I work at before anyone says there is no relevant source. Our store alone had the best Christmas sales it's ever had. 146.90.14.188 (talk) 17:25, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
