merge request
edit- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
- The result was to merge 19th century (Mormonism) into this article, and rename this article to "Chronology of Mormonism"
I added the merge request because the other article has much of the same content and covers the same area as this article, but isn't as well sourced or complete. In other words, there are two duplicate articles, one better than the other. There is no reason to have them both. Spalds (talk) 03:16, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
- I have no objection to merging. COGDEN 20:03, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
I strongly disagree with merging 19th century (Mormonism) into Chronology of Joseph Smith, Jr.. None of the material after 1844 applies to JSJr, given his death. If anything, the merge should go the other direction, retaining 19th century (Mormonism) and dispensing with Chronology of Joseph Smith, Jr.. However, while these are interrelated topics, there are enough events that properly related only to one or the other topic that keeping them distinct & improving both would be best. -- 208.81.184.4 (talk) 23:53, 29 October 2010 (UTC)
- I have another solution: what if we renamed this article as "Chronology of Mormonism" and then merged "19th century (Mormonism)" article into this article? There are separate chronology articles for the 20th century and 21st century, but we can link to them from here, or split out particular time periods as sub-articles as necessary. COGDEN 02:18, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
- Brilliant! -- 208.81.184.4 (talk) 18:22, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
Text and/or other creative content from this version of 19th century (Mormonism) was copied or moved into Chronology of Mormonism with this edit on 14 April 2011. The former page's history now serves to provide attribution for that content in the latter page, and it must not be deleted as long as the latter page exists. |
Rename
editShouldn't either this article name be changed to 19th century (Mormonism) (currently redirected here), so that it is consistent? It is part of a series of articles that also includes 20th century (Mormonism) & 21st century (Mormonism), and it would seem logical to have consistent naming between the 3 articles. -- 208.81.184.4 (talk) 22:38, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- I suppose that Chronology of Mormonism (19th century), Chronology of Mormonism (20th century), & Chronology of Mormonism (21st century) would also be an option. I don't have a strong preference either way, though this second set does seem a little clearer & more descriptive. -- 208.81.184.4 (talk) 22:41, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
- This is better, but it should be two articles... ie JS and after JS' death. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.84.1.18 (talk) 22:59, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- So something like: Chronology of Mormonism (early 19th century), Chronology of Mormonism (late 19th century) Chronology of Mormonism (20th century), & Chronology of Mormonism (21st century) ? I know that the early/late divide is technically 1850, but that is close enough to the 1844 death of JSJr, and we could explain the scope and dividing line in the article itself. -- 208.81.184.4 (talk) 17:39, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
- Why separate the 19th-century chronologies into JS and post-JS? Would the JS chronology apply to the entire Latter Day Saint movement, while post-JS is specific to the predominant LDS Church? Do other Latter Day Saint movement churches get included in the chronologies for the 20th and 21st centuries? ——Rich jj (talk) 19:45, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

- Whether or not we decide to split the 19th century into JS and post-JS, I think we should at least reconcile the existing article names, which are no longer uniform. Here are my thoughts:
- Chronology of Mormonism
i specify that the chronology is restricted to the 19th century. - Mormonism in the 20th century
Doesn't specify that it is a chronology. Does a prose narrative of 20th century Mormon history belong here? - 21st century (Mormonism)
Doesn't specify that it is a chronology. And is it odd to use "Mormonism" to disambiguate from other uses of "21st century"?
- Chronology of Mormonism
- I agree with the suggestion above (from 208.81.184.4) to use "Chronology of Mormonism (XX century)", or perhaps "Chronology of Mormonism in the XX century". ——Rich jj (talk) 19:45, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
