How about adding one? I can mention a recent Lost episode and the Abyss movie, without thinking too much.Juanmejgom 14:46, 20 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Do you think this would add anyting meaningful to the article? The submarine in that corny old show from the 60s, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (TV series) had a moon-pool, and, IIRC, so did the sub in that 60s pupper show, Stingray (TV series). I am afraid these references would be so common that they might overwhelm the non-trivial parts of the article.

The BBC television miniseries "The Deep" has two submarine vessels, each with a moon pool. The pool on the smaller submarine can take a one-person submersible; the larger vessel has a huge moon pool that can accommodate the smaller submarine. It's a surprisingly bad script, but the sets, effects, cinematography and so on are great. If you wanted to show a picture of a (fictional) moon pool, this would probably be the best source. 66.214.240.95 (talk) 18:38, 31 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

I think seaQuest DSV had a moon pool as well. Equinox 17:36, 11 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
The video game Subnautica also has a moon pool. SquidPope 5:28, 14 November 2017 (UTC)

Summary?

edit

This article badly needs either clarification or a summary of what a Moon Pool actually is. I came here from another page to find out what a moon pool is and what its purpose is, and I still have the same questions after skimming the article... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.174.98.10 (talk) 20:19, 6 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

do Submarines (eg Personal submarines) exist with a moon pool ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.246.147.210 (talk) 15:17, 8 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps this picture may be added ?

Name Origins

edit

Can anyone tell me the origins of the name Moon Pool? Why is it called a Moon Pool, why not a Bottomless Pool? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.32.255.195 (talk) 10:30, 15 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

It might be named for the A. Merritt novel to which there is a link at the top of the main article. In fact, I came here out of curiosity to see if anyone had cited any evidence to that effect, but didn't find any such mention either here or in the novel's article. —Robotech_Master (talk) 05:07, 15 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

I've been trying to find this out for years, the best answer that I've found so far, is from one of the first Norwegian Saturation divers. In the USA the early drilling was all on land, then they moved offshore using flat topped barges in relatively shallow water with drilling derreks set up over the side of the vessel. Then to improve the handling charasteristics (less motion in the center of any vessel), a barge was converted to have a center hole for the drilling derrek to operate through. On seeing the drawings someone asked the Naval Architect responsible what it was and he said, "it's a moon-pool" - In some States in America a 'moonpool' is a place one goes with, 'one's girl' to increase the population or durex's proffits.

I think the article would really benefit from a picture of one of these from the inside. I seem to recall some fictional TV programme having one, maybe SeaQuest DSV, but I don't know if what I remember was a fair representation. Does the water level slosh up and down with the movement of waves or the ship? Any information about what they're like would be appreciated. Beorhtwulf (talk) 21:21, 28 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

I feel that the article could benefit from the addition of a section discussing the origin of the name "moon pool". 142.183.79.180 (talk) 20:07, 11 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
