The following quote is from a news article on the BBC web site:

Denis Avey is a remarkable man by any measure. A courageous and determined soldier in World War II, he was captured by the Germans and imprisoned in a camp connected to the Germans' largest concentration camp, Auschwitz.

But his actions while in the camp - which he has never spoken about until now - are truly extraordinary. When millions would have done anything to get out, Mr Avey repeatedly smuggled himself into the camp.

Now 91 and living in Derbyshire, he says he wanted to witness what was going on inside and find out the truth about the gas chambers, so he could tell others. He knows he took "a hell of a chance".

According to his story, as told to the BBC, Denis Avey arranged to change places, for one night at a time, with a Jewish prisoner who was living in the barracks in the Auschwitz camp, but working at Monowitz. The two prisoners traded uniforms:

The following quote is from another news story in the Daily Mail, written by Andy Dolan and last updated on December 13, 2009:

Mr Avey was being held in Monowice, one of two smaller camps alongside the Nazis' main concentration and extermination centre at Auschwitz.

Just curious. What was a "small camp" ? 12 thousand was considered a small camp? Nunamiut (talk) 07:57, 13 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Problems?

edit

It looks like the entire History section is a mess, but this line in particular jumped out as being truly offensive:

"Due to the fact the camp had five star conditions, many Jews enjoyed their stay."

I'm not sure if this is just vandalism or what; I don't have time to do a real edit, but thought I'd highlight this in case someone else passes by with the ability. (forgot to sign) Somethingdeep99 (talk) 16:22, 14 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

What section and who made the edit? (Wow, I forgot too) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Creation7689 (talkcontribs) 16:28, 14 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Taken care of. Thanks for bringing it up. Creation7689 (talk) 16:42, 14 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Victor Perez number "Victor “Young” Perez (prisoner number 107984)" -- This number was assigned to Norbert Wollheim, as the link to the Wollheim Memorial site clearly shows. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:6C64:667F:F967:0:14E5:8EEC:BBC3 (talk) 15:25, 8 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Important question:

edit

Alex Williamson.(??) or Alexander /

It says that Monowitz was supported by Alex Williamson, in paragraph one, but it doesn't say who this was. Apparently there was an "Alexander Willim Williamson" in England, but he died in 1904. Thank you.74.239.209.92 (talk) 06:23, 13 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Rudolf Wilhelm Buchholz and Richard Stolten were SS men there. Names were retrieved from "de.wikipedia.org/Monowitz."Valleyspring (talk) 06:13, 28 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Jews and non-Jews: Clarification needed

edit

> Monowitz was built as an arbeitslager (workcamp), it also contained a "ArbeitsausbildungLager" (Labor Education Camp)" for non-Jewish prisoners perceived not up to par with German work standards. It held approximately 12,000 prisoners, the great majority of whom were Jewish, but also carried non-Jewish criminals and political prisoners.<

This is somewhat unclear. It suggests that the ArbeitsbildungLager' was a very small part of the camp and doesn't make quite clear whether there were non-Jewsih prisoners held in the camp but not in the arbeitslager Also the population varied over time. I have heard from a daughter-in-law of an inmate of the camp when Denis Avey was held that there were many Russians in Monowitz. It would be good to get this clear as this section is widely repeated on other sites. Sceptic1954 (talk) 13:24, 24 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
