The ODB (ed. Kazhdan) entry about the Monomachoi: [1] - they're not discussed as Greek. Side comment: the ethnic/national identity of ethnic Greeks in the Byzantine Empire was that of the Romaioi/Romanoi and it included ethnic Greeks and other ethnic groups which perceived themselves as Romans, Orthodox Christians and mediated their culture via the use of Greek language.--Maleschreiber (talk) 18:25, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

Thank you very much for the explanation. Greeks are still using the self appellation Romios/Roman, and they used it throughout the Ottoman dominion in Greece interchangeably with the self appellation Greek. You can find more information here Names of the Greeks. Then you have Byzantine Slavs, Byzantine Armenians, and other ethic groups. Its similar to the Austrian Empire where there were many ethic groups. As for the Monomachos family, Kazhadan and Dumbarton Oaks clearly state that the it was a Constantinopolitan family. Kievan Rus chronicles call his grand daughter, Anastasia Monomachina mother of Vladimir II Monomakh wife of Vsevolod as "Greek Queen". I will put up something together with sources scattered around that explains the family's background. In any case, Monomachos rose to power by marrying in the Byzantine Greek family of Argyros.
