Difference in the Metro population

edit

I'm wondering why there is such an ecart between the metro population reported here and the number used in the September 11 article published at http://timestranscript.canadaeast.com/news/article/1213831 on unemployment. That article put the Monction metro population at 170,000. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.67.195.72 (talk) 11:37, 12 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Statistics Canada tracks a number of different areas. The 'City of Moncton' has approx 70 thousand citizens. The Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) of Moncton had, at the last census, around 127,000 people and an estimated 135,000 today. The number you're referring to is the Economic Region of Moncton, which includes more surrounding areas.

Then again though, the Transcript makes up numbers all the time, so it's best to take it with a grain of salt. 07:02, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

It's worth noting that the census metropolitan area, as defined by Statistics Canada, doesn't necessarily always correspond exactly to what's considered the metropolitan area by local authorities; just as an example, Toronto's StatsCan CMA doesn't match up with what's formally considered the Greater Toronto Area by other standards, and Sudbury's StatsCan CMA skips out on numerous communities that would be considered metropolitan Sudbury if you asked the locals (including an entire region that actually calls itself Sudbury East.) For what it's worth, we need to stick to StatsCan data for such things, given that it's impossible to draw meaningful comparisons from one city to another if you don't have a single consistent across-the-board source — but it's not that the Transcript is necessarily making shit up, it's just that the numbers just represent two different things as determined by two different bodies working with two different definitions. Reversion of unexplained major changes

edit

I have reverted some major changes because they were made without any discussion or even an edit summary. They seem to have been made in good faith, but they are so extensive that IMHO they need to be explained, probably in advance. Please let us know what you are up to. Hello. I have been a wikipedia editor for about five years and am one of the major contributors to the Moncton article. This article has been mostly stable now for about two years and is factual and accurate. I have seen this article quoted frequently in local media. There have been significant MAJOR revisions to the article over the course of the last several weeks which have greatly changed the appearance, tone and character of the article. These major revisions have damaged the article and some critical information was removed. I simply reverted the article back to a former version from late October. cheers

MonctonRad

- Hi,

I am also a major contributor to this article, and many others in the "Moncton" wiki sphere. MonctonRad and I spent a very long time (over 2 years) refining this article into what it is today. This involved several peer reviews, Good and Featured article reviews (it is currently a "good" article). The article is of a very high caliber in comparison to other Canadian city articles and does not require the types of changes the new editor is bringing in. The article could perhaps use some polish and updating every now and again, but certainly not a re-write. Thanks Stu pendousmat (talk) 22:12, 29 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have lots of family that live in Moncton or surrounding neighborhood, I'll pop in time to time to update if needed ! Acadianproud87 (talk) 17:07, 12 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Bilingual population is actually 48%

edit

The Demography section now says "About 40% of the metropolitan population is bilingual" with no source, since this number is not in the CBC article cited at the end of the sentence. However the corresponding section of the French article fr:Moncton#Démographie says in the third paragraph that "Les deux langues officielles sont comprises par 48,1 % de la population" based on a Statistics Canada page whose English version is here. The relevant numbers are in the first column (Moncton City), second section (Knowledge of official languages) - total population 62965, English and French 30260 (= 48.1%). Dirac66 (talk) 12:56, 17 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Probably slightly higher. Most neo brunswickers have an original french last name. I.e; Acadian day is celebrated by every person who is descendents of Acadian. Acadianproud87 (talk) 15:33, 12 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Trailer Park Boys

edit

i have removed the statement that the fictional sunnyvale trailer park is 'supposed to be near moncton'. sunnyvale is actually supposed to be in dartmouth, n.s. in the episode 'the microphone assassin', a character states that it would take 2 to 3 hours to drive there from moncton.Toyokuni3 (talk) 23:43, 5 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Robb wells, aka "Ricky" is born in Moncton! Unsure if he lived here though.. Acadianproud87 (talk) 15:35, 12 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Article scope

edit

It's coming up to 12 years since the "Good Article" review. Since then it's grown by 25%. Per WP:CONTENTFORK a cleanup could be considered. It's on the long side and would benefit from having some content consolidated to a greater or lesser extent with topics in the following incomplete list:

The geographical scope of the may be too large. According to the census data in the article itself, Moncton is an area about 12km square. But the article extends from Joggins NS to Alma to Buctouche. Even Greater Moncton is only about a 25km square which does not extend to Sackville, Shediac, and others, as the article implies. --Cornellier (talk) 15:56, 9 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

This has been an ongoing problem relating to Moncton; for some reason, certain Moncton-based editors have repeatedly tried to original research their way into a "Greater Moncton" boundary that includes areas outside the actual boundaries of the properly-defined Moncton CMA. Even our article about Greater Moncton itself has seen editwarring in the past over the addition of places that are outside the actual CMA. To be fair, Sackville and Alma and Bouctouche are not extremely far outside the boundaries of the CMA proper — both the city and the CMA are actually considerably larger than the numbers you stated here, with the city at about 142 rather than 12 and the CMA at 2,500 rather than just 25 — but as defined by the organization that defines what the CMAs even are, the CMA does not actually include Sackville or Alma or Bouctouche. It's certainly possible that local organizations that define their own service areas as "Greater Moncton" might deem that to be inclusive of Sackville and Alma and Bouctouche for their own organization-specific purposes, but Wikipedia can't just assert that those towns are in "Greater Moncton" despite being outside of the CMA just because maybe the Greater Moncton United Way might treat them as if they are — we would need an objective reliable source to define Greater Moncton as an area that includes Sackville and Alma and Bouctouche before we can claim that on here, and even if such sourcing could be found we'd still have to present "Greater Moncton" and "the Moncton CMA" as two different non-synonymous things. According to the maps in the 2016 census:
  • City Census Subdivision: an area north of the Petitcodiac extending east to, but not including, the airport, west to Allison and north to around Ammon. Here's the Google map.
  • Parish census subdivision: all north of the river, extends west to Boundary Creek, north to Canaan Station / Dundas, and east to include the airport.
  • Census metropolitan area: extends east to include Memramcook and Dorchester, northeast about half way to Shediac, northwest to include the highway 515, and southwest into a large sparsely populated area around the highway 910.
Immigration Great Moncton defines Greater Moncton as Moncton, Riverview and Dieppe. The Chamber of Commerce for Greater Moncton mentions beaches 20 minutes away and so clearly does not extend to Shediac.
I propose for this article defining Moncton as per the City Census Subdivision above, and Greater Moncton as Moncton, Riverview, and Dieppe. --Cornellier (talk) 21:13, 14 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Census data updated

edit

Hi

FYI, maybe I should of posted something here first, but I updated the census data for Moncton Languages using numbers from Canada Census 2011, 2016 and 2021. I used the same type of chart and method that I found others used in New Brunswick. Harry12555 (talk) 21:29, 26 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
