Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on April 9, 2013.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that the Monbar Hotel attack was the deadliest carried out by the GAL, a death squad established by officials of the Spanish state?

Inconsistencies edit

The source provided to support the killing of Peru states that he was accidentally killed when escaping police control. The next sentence claims that he was killed by the BVE. It's definitely inconsistent. --Ecemaml (talk) 09:43, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for spotting that. It's strange that quite a number of webpages list Peru as a BVE victim, including existing English and Spanish Wikipedia pages, however reliable sources, including La Vanguardia and [El Pais http://elpais.com/diario/1979/05/13/espana/295394424_850215.html] suggest he was shot dead by a nightwatchman after fleeing from a routine police checkpoint. In light of that, I've removed him from the page. I removed your cite needed tag as I presumed that that referred to that incident and wasn't a request to prove that the BVE was operational from 1975. Yes, you're right. In fact, I've even found a publication somehow supported by the Basque government that list Peru as a victim of the BVE and, at the same time, when describing his killing, describe what La Vanguardia or El País say. Really weird. --Ecemaml (talk) 14:06, 22 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Reviewer: QatarStarsLeague (talk · contribs) 20:25, 20 April 2013 (UTC) I will review this article, mostly because I have always been intrigued by Basque culture, Basque country, the ETA, and the like. QatarStarsLeague (talk) 20:25, 20 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Lead edit

The lead seems fine.

Infobox edit

Good.

Background edit

"Three attacks occurred in Bayonne in 1984, killing two and injuring one. Prior to the Monbar attack, two people had been killed and three injured in three separate attacks in the town in 1985." I will need reference(s) for this information.
All else is great here.

I've doublechecked that info and amended the figures. One problem is that the 1984 attacks, which one source says occurred in Bayonne, occurred in the Greater Bayonne region, according to two other sources. I've removed mention of 1984 altogether and referenced the other 1985 attacks. Valenciano (talk) 17:46, 23 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

The targets edit

I assume the names listed in parentheses are nicknames? If they are, is the last nickname missing simply because you could not locate it?
Everything else is fine.

Yes they're noms de guerre, or pseudonyms. Some ETA members used them but not all. In at least five sources the first 3 have them and the last doesn't, so based on the sources, he didn't have one. Valenciano (talk) 17:46, 23 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

The attack edit

"as a football game featuring Spain and Iceland was being shown." Reference for this information nugget.
"A fifth person was injured after being hit in the foot, but survived the attack." Reference needed.
All else is excellent.

That's referenced now. Valenciano (talk) 17:46, 23 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Reactions edit

Very nice here.

Trials edit

"The trial of Pierre Frugoli and Lucien Mattei opened on 30 November 1987 in Pau, France." Why Pau, and not Bayonne. Just wondering.
"the last three days before the attack in the Orly Hotel." The Orly Hotel?
"Hotel records showed that Amedo had stayed in the Orly hotel at the same time as Frugoli and Mattei." Again, where and what is the Orly Hotel?
Everything else in this section seems fine.

Pau is where the criminal court for the region is located. The Orly Hotel is just a normal hotel in San Sebastian which those involved in the attack used as a meeting point. I've reworded that to make it clearer. Valenciano (talk) 17:46, 23 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
I guessed as much. QatarStarsLeague (talk) 14:33, 24 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Consequences edit

Excellent section!

Conclusion edit

This was a very enjoyable article to read. Once the outstanding issues are mitigated, I will once more review the article, and then, if all has been fixed, pass the article. An early congratulations! QatarStarsLeague (talk) 15:55, 23 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Let me know if there's anything else which needs fixing, and thanks a lot for taking the time to do this. Valenciano (talk) 17:46, 23 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
