To 2012 Midi-Pyrénées shootings, per WP:CRIME. FormerIP (talk) 12:17, 21 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I don't believe WP:CRIME applies here because of "The motivation for the crime or the execution of the crime is unusual". But we should probably discuss this when the siege has ended. --Wikieditoroftoday (talk) 12:33, 21 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Classic WP:BLP1E IMO; cover the event not the person. matt (talk) 15:01, 21 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
He's the only known suspect of attacks which took place on three different days - does that qualify as known only for one event? 188.28.112.12 (talk) 15:29, 21 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
And the attempted arrest and resulting siege is another event to add to the list. --Wikieditoroftoday (talk) 15:44, 21 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
No it isn't. It's another "event" to include in the main article. FormerIP (talk) 15:46, 21 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Murderers edit

I thought murderers generally don't get their own bios, particularly if all they are known for is the murder(s). Auchansa (talk) 03:15, 23 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Alleged murderer edit

Shouldn't this article say that he was the alleged murderer? The Robert Bales article says that he was an alleged murder. 124.169.29.26 (talk) 23:22, 22 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

He admitted to the crimes. He said he had video of the crimes that he intended to post to the Internet. He gave reasons why he committed the crimes. I think we're past the 'alleged' stage of things. Moving on, why is there no mention of the rabbi and three children he murdered? I propose at least a one sentence bio on each of the victims. Merah's death edit

Was he killed ... or did he kill himself? The lead of the article states that he was killed in a siege. The body of the article states that he jumped from a window. If he committed suicide (by jumping from a window), it is inaccurate to say that "he was killed". It is more appropriate to say that he committed suicide or that he killed himself. Any thoughts? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 23:29, 22 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

It was out of the first floor as far as I've read (BBC I think?).TMCk (talk) 23:51, 22 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. After posting the above question, I read that he was shot in the head as he jumped from the window. (See this link: French standoff ends with suspect shot in the head.) Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 00:06, 23 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Are you sure he died that recently?140.198.42.45 (talk) 01:22, 23 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

English edit

Should I change the dates to March 22 from 22 March, as to me, that reads and sounds weird. Thanks. We aren't the British English encyclopedia. We're the every English type encyclopedia. Be peaceful. Be a Dalai Lama. (talk) 00:19, 23 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Since the article deals mainly with France, I think that we are supposed to use France's convention for dates. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Dates and numbers#Strong national ties to a topic. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 00:24, 23 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wrong information edit

On the video recently released (where is possible to see the attacker's last moments) it's clear that he didn't have any gun when he jumped. Check it. --190.172.222.202 (talk) 07:25, 23 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

The article only mentions two of the three incidents...the shooting of the rabbi and Jewish students is left out of the main paragraph which later refers to "all three" incidents. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.161.65.67 (talk) 16:07, 23 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Move Mohammed to Mohamed edit

All French sources writes "Mohamed", not "Mohammed" [1]. I think we should respect the French spelling of "Mohamed" and Merah's official name. DITWIN GRIM (talk) 08:49, 23 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Support - As per nom. Mohamed is the more common spelling of the name in France and almost all French sources spell it as Mohamed. TonyStarks (talk) 09:10, 23 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ethnicity edit

This says that his father is French and his mother is Algerian. Other sources says both of his parents are French of Algerian descent. Which do we follow? The Telegraph is a very reputable source, as is Le Monde (the source indicating that both of his parents are of Algerian descent). Would it not make more sense to indicate both (that some sources state his father is French and others state that he is French of Algerian descent)? TonyStarks (talk) 09:13, 23 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

The Telegraph's article was written in "live" during the event, the article of Le Monde is an article specifically about Merah's origins, so I would give more credit to Le Monde's article. Furthermore, "Merah" is an Arabic name, according to French law, children receive their father's name, so, by deduction, his father was of Arabic descent. DITWIN GRIM (talk) 09:30, 23 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes, the live factor was the reason I didn't want to update the article without discussing it here first. As for the last name, any number of family situations could be a reason for him to use his mother's name. Samir Nasri played under the name Samir Ben Said until age 16 or so. TonyStarks (talk) 09:34, 23 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
If his parents of French of Algerian descent, then his ethnicity would still be Algerian, as he would never be an ethnic French. If one of his parents was Algerian and one French, then his ehtnicity would be both, French and Algerian. Norum 16:58, 23 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Did I say any different? TonyStarks (talk) 21:27, 23 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Should we be including ethnicity in the infobox anyway. It is not standard, and there's a particularly strong case for excluding it if we are not sure/can't agree what it is. FormerIP (talk) 21:32, 23 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
