Date of premiere edit

Where, I wonder, did the earlier assertion (which I have corrected) come from that the premiere was on either 15 or 17 November 1881? All the classified ads in the various papers (I have cited three but there are plenty more) for 11 October say that the first perf is "tonight". - Tim riley (talk) 08:15, 24 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Walters and Low give that date in their articles on the curtain raisers, including here: https://www.gsarchive.net/companions/mock_turtles/index.html Could the opening have been delayed after the newspaper ads were published, or is there an opening night review? -- Ssilvers (talk) 13:27, 24 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Walters and Low are wrong. A review of current shows in The Era, 22 October, states that Mock Turtles is running with Pinafore [Patience, see below], and the theatre ads of The Morning Post, The Standard, and The Pall Mall Gazette list it under "tonight's entertainments" for every day (except Sundays) from 11 Oct to 17 Nov and beyond. Walters and Low can't even get the name of the composer right: they have him as "Fanning" - Tim riley (talk) 15:20, 24 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Urk! I'll let the Archive know. -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:03, 24 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Mea culpa - The Era printed "Patience", which I wrongly transcribed above as "Pinafore". - Tim riley (talk) 19:28, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
