Chakma/Reang are not Mizo

Mizo does not means Hill People

Contrary to popular believe, the official book published by the Study Group of Arts and Culture Department, Government of Mizoram - Mizo History in India, Burma and Bangladesh mentioned that the word MIZO must have some deeper and ancient meaning. After reading this, I study the word formation and naming system of Mizo language. Wild animal means 'SA', Human means 'MI' or 'MIHRING'. So, to name a particular animal like Tiger, Horse, Bear, etc., we say Sakei, Sakawr, Savawm, repectively. And, to name a particular tribe/community like White, Black, Brown people, we say Mingo, Midum, Mibuang respectively. Mirawng for Kabui Naga, Miria for Miu-Khumi.

So, 'Mi' must means 'people' (with no doubt), but what will 'Zo' means? Surely, 'Zo' is adjective part of the word. Lpachuau (talk) 11:30, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Clans or sub-tribes?

I would object to the use of "clan" for a group within which marriages take place, like Hmar or Lusei... Clan is most generally used by anthropologist to refer to an exogamous group, i.e. people who should not marry among themselves. I suggest we use sub-tribes or sections, to refer to subgroups of the Mizo ethnic group/tribe.

Since the Mizo are not a tribe, wouldn't they just be called "tribes"? — kwami (talk) 17:00, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Language

Mizo has never been a language except that it defines loosely a close group of people whose tribal identities share similarities and nor is Mizo a tribe. It is a generic term that's all unless it eventually evolves to mean a tribe where all the different tribes sharing similarities and who collectively define the word Mizo willingly without prejudice accepts it and have no intentions of safeguarding itself and determining its identity. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lkhawzawl (talk • contribs) 13:31, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

Since Mizo languages are defined ethnically rather than linguistically, IMO they would be better off merged here. There's hardly any material to that stub anyway. — kwami (talk) 16:53, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

I created the article because the Mizo language article deals only with the current Mizo language. The Mizo people article here has no reference to the languages. I still think the Mizo languages article is useful. I will try my best to include more material.

By the way, the Lusei people article is rather useless, IMO. In a sense, lusei no longer exists as a separate ethnic entity. Although Mara people, Paite people etc. still exist, all lusei people are rather completely absorbed into the bigger Mizo people, and their language has become Mizo language (with significant influence from Pawi language etc.). Of course I do not mean that all lusei people have gone extinct. It is just that the Mizo people article includes all of them already. And in Mizo society (Mizo speaking people in Mizoram) there is no distinction between the traditional clans. We just bear them as surnames in some form.

But maybe it is still useful as a historical reference, such as the article about the Franks. (Mizo^{Phéngphehlep ṭial máwi tê!} 13:51, 19 June 2012 (UTC))

Name change

Should the Title of the article be changed to Mizo or Lushai. The reason is that most ethnicities are titled by the (English) ethnic names and this one is titled with 'people'. Sangsangaplaz (talk) 14:31, 1 July 2023 (UTC)
