Problem with "Political Views" section edit

I'm afraid that the information given in the "Political Views" section was not complete. In one line, it stated that,

"Miyake felt Japan should make it it's mission to study Asia, oppose western imperialism, and nurture the distinctive Japanese sense of beauty."

Unfortunately, many Japanese during the Meiji era claimed to have "opposed Western imperialism". However this critique of Western imperialism allowed the Japanese to create new rhetoric claiming that Japan will help free their Asian brothers and sisters from the evil of the West by becoming the leader, or in other words, make them Japanese colonies. The desire to study Asia also stems from this imperialist rhetoric since Japan practiced its own form of Orientalism, even if it was thought of being a part of the "Orient". By producing knowledge of Asia (Touyou), Japan was able to put the rest of Asia in their own framework by essentializing Asia and by putting it in a vertical hierarchy with Japan on top while claiming that a sense of "Japanese-ness" was what enabled them to "modernize" and fend off Western imperialism (hence the troubling quality of the statement about a "Japanese sense of beauty"/"Japanese aesthetic"/"Japanese spirituality").

Although I admit that I don't know much about Miyake, anyone with an ounce of knowledge of Japanese colonialism would hear alarm bells ringing after seeing such a statement. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.231.14.8 (talk) 23:42, 18 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
