School type/religious affiliation edit

The religious affiliation or designation as "non-sectarian" is not so clear cut. For example, Duke University describes its ties with Methodism as "formal, on-going, and symbolic" [1] while Wake Forest maintains "a dedication to the values rooted in its Baptist heritage" [2]. Both schools can be considered "non-sectarian" in that they are no longer under the direct auspices of their founding religious organizations. Likewise, Boston College maintains its Jesuit identity in spite of the fact that it severed its formal ties with the Jesuit Order (and thereby the Catholic Church) in the 1960s when it was independently incorporated under a lay board of trustees. Unlike the Catholic University of America, which is under the direct auspices of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, or the University of Notre Dame, which is governed by "fellows" who must be priests of the Congregation of Holy Cross, The Trustees of Boston College (BC's governing body) operate independent of any religious jurisdiction. This arrangement is probably similar to that at Duke or Wake Forest, except that the BC trustees have voluntarily chosen to elect members of the founding religious organization to the presidency (though they are not required to do so). In fact, similar arrangements exist at other Jesuit colleges and universities, where both women and non-clerics have been elected to presidency (most recently at Georgetown). All of this is to say that I think the nature of a school's religious affiliation is beyond the scope of this article, and that "public" or "private" suffice in the context of the members table.--24.63.125.78 10:09, 7 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ed, you are acting unilaterally in your interpretation of policy yet again. There is no consensus in support of the actions you are taking. You are well aware of the ongoing discussion at Wikipedia_talk:Logos#Clarification_on_use_of_sports_team_logos. Johntex\talk 16:11, 4 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Mvclogo.gif edit

Image:Mvclogo.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 05:20, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Missouri State vs Southwest Missouri State edit

We've been going back and forth on this for a while, so I thought I'd bring it to a talk page for discussion. Since the titles that were won by Missouri State were won when they were Southwest Missouri State, they should be indicated as such. Any titles that Missouri State wins in the future should be labeled as Missouri State titles. X96lee15 01:05, 22 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

For historical purposes, the University considers itself "Missouri State University." You'll see this as you look through the Valley's records and tournament history or at any of the University's media guides, etc. You won't see "Southwest" anywhere, as it really is Missouri State University. You could add "formerly known as Southwest Missouri State University," but that seems a little over the top. —Preceding unsigned comment added by MOk (talkcontribs) 01:53, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I don't think that an institution can "rewrite" history. Of course an institution can change its name, but can it really say that things in the past happened differently than they did? I'm not sure. Maybe they can? — X96lee15 (talk) 16:57, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
From what I've read, it's not so much changing history, it's more of keeping history consistent. In 20 years, few people will know Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State are the same. So, the university says references should be made to "Missouri State" because that is the official name of that institution, regardless of prior names. The MVC basketball program lists MSU as that - Missouri State - throughout. MOk (talk) 02:37, 12 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Proposal to make timelines more consistent edit

I noticed that conferences in List of NCAA conferences have articles, usually including a membership timeline. While some of the decisions made for each conference make some sense, there is a wide variety of styles for the various timelines, particularly involving color choices, but also other matters of style that could be more consistent.

for example, a school with a yellow bar means:

  • An associate member in one sport (if part of the BE)
  • A former member of the conference (in the SEC)
  • A future member of the conference (in the SEC and Big West)
  • A football only member (in the Sun Belt)
  • A team that has moved to another conference (in the WAC, NEC)
  • A full member of the Big Sky

Some graphs have captions, some do not, and none are centered. To see the variety of styles, review Current conference timelines

I think it would be worth discussing how best to provide some measure of consistency, recognizing that there may be legitimate reasons for some differences from a standard presentation (for example, some conferences show the name of the new conference for former members. In some cases, this makes sense, in other, it may not.)

I've produced a draft of how the timelines would look with some consistency added. Please see Draft proposal of conference timelines.

I propose a discussion to see if there is consensus on improving the consistency.

Because it would not be practical to have this discussion on each and every conference talk page, I suggest centralizing this discussion at the Talk page of Project College football SPhilbrick(Talk) 12:51, 12 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Conference moves edit

With the announcements of Wichita State leaving and now Valparaiso joining, please don't jump the gun and change to former and current members until that actually happens. Valpo should be listed as a "future" member and WSU should remain a "current" member until the current sports season ends. In the past, that has been July 1 unless sources say otherwise. --JonRidinger (talk) 15:46, 9 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

According to the website and news sources, Valpo has only been invited, they have not accepted the invitation. There should be no "Future members" section until it the school has accepted it. Corkythehornetfan (ping me) 21:11, 9 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
That is correct... The invitation was extended, and the MVC stated that "...There will be no further comment pending the negotiation of terms..."... As of 8:45 CST on the 9th, Valpo has also not commented... GWFrog (talk) 01:49, 10 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

So why did you edit my red highlight on Wichita St. that is currently being used on wiki for other conference pages that involve schools that are leaving the conference at the end of the sports year? Examples North Dakota and the Big Sky, Cal Baptist, Dixie St. and the PWC. Seems more like it's for spite.

(That was probably by accident--- I put the red back w/note on WSU leaving... GWFrog (talk) 02:14, 10 May 2017 (UTC))Reply

Thanks!

Like I said. I didn't make anyone a former member, I did what has always been done in the past. I added red to the school that is leaving at the end of the sports year. and put the future member in the future member area where they have always gone. I've been doing this for 27 years a conference doesn't go Public w/ an invite to a school from a lesser conference w/o the school confirming before the conference goes public. After the MVC site visit the MVC contacted Valpo lettting them know that they were chosen. Valpo then agreed but can't do anything else until July 1st. If they said uh we'll think about it then the MVC wouldn't have went public today.

My initial post wasn't directed at anyone specific. This kind of "jumping the gun" happens all the time with any kind of change, especially in sports articles (name changes to stadiums, new stadiums and arenas opening, old arenas closing, conference affiliations...). By the time I made my first edit, WSU was already listed in "Former full members", so I simply moved it back. The red background was removed in this edit by an anonymous editor, just after they had replaced the WSU entry with Valpo in the "Current members" section. --JonRidinger (talk) 04:47, 10 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Bad map edit

Does anyone have a more accurate map, this one has school placements no where near where they should be located. 173.29.24.67 (talk) 17:58, 12 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
