Title change

I personally feel that the mission's name should be fully translated into the English "Mission of Our Lady of Loreto", and by extension, the article's title should be changed. Any thoughts? Draeco 17:28, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

There's quite a bit of precedent to not translate the mission's name; a Misión Nuestra Senora de Loreto Conchó link appears twice in Spanish missions in California, along with many other Spanish-language links to pages written in English. Wdfarmer 00:41, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

By that logic, the title and all ensuing references should be reverted back to the pure Spanish name, including 'Misión de'. I think it should be purely one way or the other, and your argument is very convincing. We can always put up a redirect for 'Mission of our Lady of Loreto' and variants. Recent edit removed quite a bit

This recent edit is summarized as "corrections, additions, pruning of extraneous material", but it looks to me like a lot of what was pruned was not extraneous. At a quick glance, the article as rewritten removes, among other things, all mention of the 1767/1768 expulsion of the Jesuits and of the independence of Mexico. It cuts quite a bit else that I would also presume relevant. On the other hand, it may have some actual "corrections and additions", so I hesitate to revert: it's not a topic I know much about. - Jmabel | Talk 19:19, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

Reasons for pruning

Some of the material was removed because it was not germane specifically to Mission Loreto and some because it was not accurate. I'd be glad to explain and to justify or reconsider any specific deletions.

The Jesuit explusion and the reasons why it occurred is an interesting and important subject, but it's discussed in several other articles. It had no specific bearing on the mission at Loreto (other than resulting in the replacement of Jesuit by Franciscan missionaries).

The previous version's account of the mission's decline is not entirely correct. The mission was in decline long before Mexico became independent in 1821. The Pious Fund was not eliminated in 1767; it was transferred to government control, first under Spain and then under Mexico, and continued until 1840 or later.

How can you write about a mission and not even mention that at one point the order that was in charge of it was expelled from the country? And how many English-language readers will just happen to know this. Yes, it is covered in detail elsewhere in the encyclopedia, but not in any place that the reader is liable to get to from here, especially if there isn't even a one-phrase mention here to tell them they might want to look. - Jmabel | Talk 22:08, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

The recent edits seem decent to me. The article was somewhat unwieldy before, and the new article is much smoother. I definitely agree the Jesuit expulsion should be mentioned; in addition to the new wording, I've added a link to the Suppression of the Jesuits. As for the effects of the Mexican War of Independence, I am no expert. If Pathfinder has really read the books he cited in his new version, I'll defer to his wisdom. I would like to see some direct quotes from those books, and also a mention of the article's involvement in the SPATRA, even if it no longer "draws heavily" upon its sister. - Draeco 06:13, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
