Origin of word Miramichi

I wonder if the origin of the word Miramichi is actually Mi'gmaq. That language does not have an "r" sound or a "sh" sound. The Canadian Encyclopedia http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&Params=A1ARTA0005333 suggests that the word comes from an old dialect of Montagnais; I can’t vouch for the meaning, but the phonology seems much more appropriate. languagegeek (talk) 07:57, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

I’ve added some additional information on the Mi'gmaq etymology to the wikipedia articles dealing with each branch (i.e., Northwest Miramichi River, Southwest Miramichi River, Little Southwest Miramichi River. Each branch had a different name Lesfreck (talk) 27 August 2008.

Origin of the word Miramichi is of Mi'kmaq origin, not Montagnais. There are many words that sound similar to it, without the R of Sh sound, which is believed to be the European interpretation of the language. "Miramichi is probably from the Mi'kmaq Megamaage or Megamage, translated by Silas T. Rand as 'land of the Micmacs.'
