should we really keep the Door of Night and Walls of the Night on here? They technically arnt part of Middle-earth. I think ill make a new Minor miscellaeneous places in Arda.

Sea of Rhun

Calculations of the area of the Sea of Rhun are vastly incorrect. In every copy I own, the maps in the opening pages are scaled to suggest that the sea is roughly 175-200 miles across. Though irregularly shaped, this would make it something like 300,000-400,000 square miles. The scale shown would make 400 square miles 20x20 miles, a barely visible feature. I suspect the original author miscalculated and forgot to add the additional zeros when he correctly measured the breadth of the sea at 200 miles. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.32.141.101 (talk) 14:42, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Merge proposal

Cirith Ungol

A recently complete articles for deletetion discussion concluded to merge Cirith Ungol into this article. Cirith Ungol is a very long article. The precedent here, however, is short summaries. I'll merge in the whole thing as Cirith Ungol and also an entry at Morgul Pass, also disussed in that article. Perhaps the full content could be moved to a LOTR wiki or something? No--Tolkien never based his place names on real places. It would have broken the quasi-historical atmosphere. He explicitly says so in one of his letters, though I disremember which one. --Jtle515 (talk) 18:53, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

User:Dondegroovily is certainly correct: the 'Cirith Ungol' article is very long. I have endeavoured to relieve this by further subdividing it.

The section 'Tower of Cirith Ungol' (which preceded my further subdivision) contains a template message: "This section does not cite any sources." If someone can identify which parts require references, I'll see what I can do to provide them. BTW the two horns bit doesn't seem quite right to me, but I have left this unchanged.

What do people think of incorporating the 'Torech Ungol' article within the 'Cirith Ungol' article? (This would be at the same level as 'Tower of Cirith Ungol'.) Jungleboy63 (talk) 08:10, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

There is far too much detail under Cirith Ungol. This whole section should be cut back significantly: we don't need, e.g., a description of the floor plan. Torech Ungol should be left where it is, and information on the Tower itself should probably be moved to a separate entry. -- Elphion (talk) 12:05, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

Merge Osgiliath into this article

Osgiliath was proposed for deletion, and perhaps merging it into this article is a better alternative. Ithilien

Somehow Isildur had been added as the Eponymous source for Ithilien, the only source I can find for this link is on the Tolkien gateway but this is unsourced on that site, does anyone have a better source? GimliDotNet ^{(Speak to me,Stuff I've done)} 07:44, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

How to make new entries come up in searches

Hi all, I am new to Wikipedia, so please forgive this question. I have created a new minor place in Middle-earth entry for the 'Morannon' but when I do a search for 'Morannon' using Wikipedia's search bar it just takes me to the Mordor article (which though it contains info on the Morannon it is less detailed than the new article). Fixed. Morannon was redirected to the wrong place: "List of Minor places in Middle-earth" (upper case "Minor") instead of "List of minor places in Middle-earth" (lower case "minor"). -- Elphion (talk) 18:36, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

The Two Watchers

§ Tower of Cirith Ungol says

It is not known if the Watchers were built by men of Gondor, as was the Tower itself, or if it had been added later by Sauron.

The guardian statues are hardly likely to have been Gondorian work, as

The heads had vulture-faces, and on their great knees were laid clawlike hands.

Barrow-downs

Where does the information in the entry for the Barrow-downs come from? The second paragraph is not supported by the reference to App. A. The third paragraph is unsourced and contains OR. The "capital of Cardolan" is nonsense. -- Elphion (talk) 12:14, 16 May 2018 (UTC)
