This was a well-covered news story in 2003, and I have added two footnotes, referencing some of the many news articles. I will add more, if the editors think it necessary.

Out of curiosity, what or who tagged it as "nonsense", and so quickly too?

I updated this article using news references from 2003-2004. Some text has been amended to conform to the references:

1st paragraph: Ming was apparently 3 years old [neighbors had known about the tiger for approximately three years per (October 6, 2003 New York Times) article], and the dwelling was five-bedrooms in a public housing complex [ibid; article names the complex and provides the address].

3rd paragraph: The hospital is named in the (Oct 6 2003 NYT) article, and the story behind the bite's origin is given in the (Oct 8 2003 NYT) article as well as the (Animal Planet interview). These sources disagree on where he was bit, though (NYT says arm, Animal Planet says leg). The (Oct 8 2004 NYT) article does say arm and leg, so both sources are accurate.

4th paragraph: The fact that Yates checked out of the first hospital, disappeared, and was later located at a Philadelphia-area hospital (where his mom had moved earlier in the year) is salient because in the eyes of the prosecution, it established him as a flight risk (Oct 8 2013 NYT). Also, the (Oct 8 2004 NYT) article states the police were tipped off to go investigate a wild animal, not just because of the suspicious wounds, and the text is updated to reflect this. The timeline of events is taken from text in the (Oct 6 2013 NYT) article.

5th paragraph: (Oct 6 2003 NYT) article states the neighbors were aware he was keeping a tiger in the apartment. The 6th paragraph/quotation also indicates neighbor awareness. Perhaps the 'urban legend' of the tiger in the apartment was amongst neighboring buildings, not within the same building.

7th paragraph: Sentencing and legal events are more clearly stated here; he was not convicted he was killed, he pled guilty; he was sentenced to five months imprisonment, not six; he served three months before being released (refer to sources in the article).
