Impact edit

I'm a complete novice on agricultural economics so I think it would be good if this article included an explanation of the impact on milk/cheese/butter prices in the shops. Also what impact do Milk Quotas have on the farming community? Matthewcgirling (talk) 10:54, 17 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

not just in UK edit

The article should cover all the european countries where milk quotas exist, not just UK. Stefantalpalaru (talk) 16:48, 3 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Reasons for quota edit

Why is there a quota? My research indicated that it allows governments to charge a levy for overproduction which then subsidises storage schemes provided by the government which protects farmers from price instability caused by oversupply? Testem (talk) 08:51, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • The purpose of the quota is to maintain the price of milk at a level that's sustainable for smaller dairy farmers. Basically, the most efficient way to produce milk is to keep huge herds of thousands of cattle and milk them on an industrial scale. However, the impact of these huge factory farms on the environment, and the implications for animal welfare, mean that in the UK we've decided not to go down that route. So we try to resist downward pressure on milk prices from the supermarkets by government intervention in the markets, and the milk quota is one of the tools in the box.—S Marshall T/C 09:44, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

The result of the move request was: moved to Milk quotas in the United Kingdom. It was noted that the article primarily focuses on the UK, only mentioning the EU in a handful of places; otherwise, the nominator's proposal for a more specific title appears to have achieved consensus. Milk quotaMilk quotas in the European Union – Milk quotas in Canada are described in Market Sharing Quota; presumably they have existed in many countries from time to time. -- Beland (talk) 01:12, 7 September 2023 (UTC) — Relisting. – MaterialWorks 17:05, 14 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
