Medical explanation

edit

I'm glad to see this article! Here are some notes on my recent edit de-emphasizing lactose intolerance, in case the reasoning isn't clear:

  • http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/lactose-intolerance/DS00530 is the citation given for the claim that lactose intolerance can cause vomiting. It's original research to try to apply this claim here, as the website doesn't mention milk chugging.
    • The website's list of symptoms doesn't even include vomiting, only "Diarrhea, Nausea, Abdominal cramps, Bloating, Gas". In order to use this source to relate milk chugging to vomiting, you would have to combine three ideas: milk chugging triggers lactose intolerance, lactose intolerance causes nausea, and nausea causes vomiting. This combination of ideas isn't done in the source.
  • Sarah Ash directly contradicts the lactose intolerance theory in detail, and she's a professor of nutrition. Beth Mendenhall is an undergraduate studying political science and philosophy, and her article mentions the theory only in passing. Ash's explanation wins. :-)
  • I removed several sentences describing lactose intolerance, replacing them with a link to the article Lactose intolerance.

Also...

  • It is probably true that "the difficulty in successfully completing the gallon challenge has not been empirically studied", but this was not cited.
  • "the high basicity of milk" is contradicted by our very own Milk article: "Cow milk has a pH ranging from 6.4 to 6.8, making it slightly acidic."

The bullet saying that milk poses less risk water intoxication needs a citation (and I don't buy it.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.158.159.12 (talk) 07:10, 16 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Agreed, I've simply removed it. Melchoir (talk) 19:33, 16 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Another challenge for milk chugging is the 30-60 minutes of digestion also allows that quantity of milk to begin curdling in your stomach due to base/acid and heat, thus triggering the vomit reflex. - Jerokhna 10:03, 14 October 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 132.3.57.68 (talk)

Previous article

edit

Before Gallon challenge was a redirect to Milk chugging, there was another article by that title. It was deleted in February 2009. I've restored the pre-redirect revisions for comparison; there are one or two good ideas in there. Melchoir (talk) 09:36, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Was this article linked from a high-traffic site today?

I'm not sure where all the vandalism came from. Melchoir (talk) 02:15, 1 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

This article was mentioned on PKA 95, you should have kept the article how they left it... RSK!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Specialed95 (talkcontribs) 09:00, 23 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
