From whence comes the definitive death date? edit

I'm curious as to where the definitive death date of August 16, 1927 comes from. The race began that day, and that was apparently the last day anyone who was not in the airplane saw her, but given that the plane went missing, it's far from certain that she died that day. The "Miss Doran" did not take-off until after noon on the 16th, and it was not until the 17th that the fastest plane reached Hawaii, so if the "Miss Doran" was still in the air even for 12 hours (certainly a plausible scenario) she would have still been alive on the 17th. And even if, as it is more probable, the "Miss Doran" went down on the 16th, that still does not mean she would've died upon ditching in the sea; the plane carried a life-raft and flotation devices. Of course some speculated that she survived considerably longer, or even that they reached Hawaii where they crashed, and might have survived. Ultimately we may never know, but that also requires some circumspection about her death date. I think it should be couched in those uncertain terms. Bricology (talk) 20:07, 24 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
