Capitalization

edit

How should we capitalize the proper name of the company in this article? On its website, the company uses at least three inconsistent capitalization forms, even in the same section of the same page, as can be seen in a screenshot: "MikroElektronika", "MikroElektronika" and "mikroElektronika". The Wikipedia article consistently uses "MikroElektronika", except for the title, which is spelled "Mikroelektronika". Is there an established best practice on the English Wikipedia for what to do when the owner/originator of a name doesn't adhere to a single form of spelling/capitalization? Going with what is most commonly used by the community would be an option, but that is hard to quantify. For example, Google ignores capitalization in search terms. ehn (talk) 07:24, 14 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Ehn: This has been a feature of Wikipedia articles and is mostly a historical issue where article titles were restricted to the first (or only) word having an initial capital letter but the remainder were lower case. At the time the article on the pentium processors was written, for example, the article title was restricted to "Pentium" even though Intel spelt it (and trademarked it) as "pentium". The article today uses the capitalised version throughout [quickly checks to make sure that this is true]. Having said all that: Intel themselves seem somewhat inconsistent and both on the parts and in their documentation present it as "pentium", "Pentium" and even "PENTIUM".
I note that the current relevant part of the Manual of style requires that proprietary names (trademarks) written by the owner with lower case should be written in a "... style that most closely resembles standard English text formatting and capitalisation rules ..." (i.e. a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence and for proper nouns - which tradenames generally are). That would make the article name compliant to the MOS. 81.153.20.205 (talk) 17:29, 26 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
