This sentence is very misleading and thus liable to misinterpretation: "He was an advocate of ecclesiastical poverty, in which dispute he found himself ranged against Pope John XXII." In fact, Michael, as Minister-General, opposed certain bulls which John XXII promulgated concerning (1) the nature of the absolute poverty of Christ and the Apostles, and (2) John's interpretation of Franciscan (i.e., "evangelical") poverty.
