Subject Information: File includes material referring to Michael Staines’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers, IRA, National Army and Garda Síochána from 1 April 1916 through the Easter Rising, War of Independence, Truce Period and Civil War, up to his resignation from the post of Garda Commissioner on 17 September 1922. Michael Staines served as: a member of Patrick Pearse's staff, member of the Executive of the Irish Volunteers, Quartermaster General of the Irish Volunteers and IRA (until succeeded by Fintan Murphy summer 1920), Liaison Officer for Mayo and Galway during the Truce Period and first Commissioner of the Garda Síochána. File also contains: signed statements supporting subject's claims from Diarmuid O' hÉigceartuigh (Diarmuid O' Hegarty), Eamon Morcan and Richard Mulcahy; and material relating to: subject's successful attempt to have his service with Garda Síochána recognised as "active service" as defined under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1924; his wife's unsuccessful application for a pension or gratuity following his death; and to his three sons, daughter, three daughters in law and one grand daughter.
