Cure for Parkinson's

I don't doubt he'll be able to cure Parkinson's disease, but I don't think it will happen soon. We can only hope for the best and try to help him. Cbsteffen 03:06, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Cbsteffen

I don't doubt that many believe that embryonic stem cell research will hold the key to a cure for the disease, however a statement in the paragraph is worded like a POV if no link to external proof is given, "especially embryonic stem cell research, which many in the scientific community believe may one day help sufferers of Parkinson's and other debilitating illnesses" This is worded like an opinion, and should be rephrased or provided with external proof. Metamorphousthe 13:33, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

It's difficult not to cite opinion on an issue which is so governed by opinion in itself. And it's too bad, because the strange truth would be phrased like this: "the potential for treatment is there (in embyonic stem cell research), however the current U.S. administration will not invest time, intelligence, or money in the issue because of their individual religious beliefs, which don't necessarily reflect the beliefs of the American public and/or the rest of the living world." Of course, that would never fly in WikiLand. It's a veritable Catch 22. On a lighter note, nice work on this page everyone.Silver Dollar 15:50, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

I work at The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research and I have just corrected a factual error on this page. The Foundation was not created only to support embryonic stem cell research, rather, to advance every promising path toward a cure for PD. This includes ESC research where it shows promise but ESC research is in fact a relatively small portion of our Foundation's research investments to date. For more information on our work, please visit our Foundation's Web site. My name is Holly Barkhymer and I am the associate director of communications for the Foundation. Nancy McKeon

I know that during the mid-1980s Fox was in a highly publicized relationship with actress Nancy McKeon. I don't think I've the right tone in adding it to Fox's article. Anyone up for it? IndulgentReader (talk) 08:37, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Early Life

He didn't go to Burnaby South, he went to Burnaby Central. There is a theater named after him at Burnaby South because he donated money towards its construction, not because he attended that school. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.70.100.154 (talk) 22:04, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

"Years active" in the infobox useful?

For some reason, unknown to me because an edit summary is never used, an editor keeps adding (example diff) "years active: 1970 to present". Aside from this not being in line with the info in the article (Birth year + first acting gig mention = about 1976), he has actually stopped and started his acting career due to PD. Does anyone else think this is useful in the infobox? R. Baley (talk) 04:51, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Dual Canadian-U.S. citizenship

The 1st paragraph under "Personal life, illness and advocacy" is about his dual Canadian-U.S. citizenship. Does this really belong here, with the wife and kids info? I would suggest moving this further down. 87.70.94.237 (talk) 17:49, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Horrendous writing

I was just reading through the 'post family ties' section and it is almost unreadable. Terrible grammar all over the place. At his age, given that he is still working...it seems premature to label a specific period as "mid-career," it implies you have a pretty good idea of how soon his career will end. He may be in "mid-career" right now. Bustter (talk) 08:14, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

Contradictory year of diagnosis statements

The intro states "Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991 at age 29," and later it is said "After being privately diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 1991."

However, also stated is "Fox started displaying symptoms of early-onset Parkinson's disease in 1991 while shooting the movie Doc Hollywood, although he was not properly diagnosed until the next year," which would obviously make the year of diagnosis 1992. Which one is it?

I recall in 1983 how he was considered for the role of Robin (the Batman sidekick) in an addition of the franchise that never made it out of development hell, and according to this online source - "just might have had the boyish charm to pull it off" - and at the time I thought him a natural for the role too - https://batman-news.com/2013/07/04/10-batman-films-that-almost-happened/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mr gobrien (talkcontribs) 15:28, 13 April 2019 (UTC)

shouldn't there be something about Fox (and his foundation's) involvement in PPMI?

it seems strange that PPMI is not even mentioned on his page.

it is likely the most comprehensive database on cohorts with Parkinson's Disease, with sites and samples from across the world.

he is the driving force behind this 100M initiative: https://www.michaeljfox.org/ppmi-clinical-study and it is probably the definitive source for this kind of data.

The mission of PPMI is to identify one or more biomarkers of Parkinson’s disease progression. The discovery of a biomarker is a critical step in the development of new and better treatments for PD. This study is being sponsored by The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

not sure if this effort has to result in some kind of breakthrough to be noteworthy on his page, but it is certainly hard to argue he has not spent the money to warrant its mention. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.53.109.35 (talk) 23:04, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

Comedian

I know his career section says nothing about him doing comedy throughout his career, but is it ok if we can restore it back as his occupation? Because there are mostly times that he’s known for being funny, because there are some shows and films he did that were comedy. Especially Back to the Future, the filmmakers wanted someone who is good at comedy and everything and that’s why they replace Eric Stoltz with Fox, because they wanted someone who could make the audience laugh. So is it ok if we reinclued this again? 73.61.18.200 (talk) 16:03, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

The lead should probably say that he's best known for comedy films and television. But, yes, that is different from "being a comedian" which in contemporary English largely implies a professional focus on standup or sketch comedy.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  21:07, 21 March 2021 (UTC)

First line

@Moxy: The source mentioned in this edit describes him as "Canadian-American actor". Could you explain the reasoning for the "Canadian-born U.S. citizen" wording? Hrodvarsson (talk) 05:07, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

For clarity.....we have a problem with Americans not understanding what nationality is...andding Canadian-American to top level actors at random...but not minor ones Jason Priestley or Leonard Cohen. or Paul Anka. We dont see this stuff on other articles like Albert Einstein.or Oscar de la Renta or Christiane Amanpour or Hamdi Ulukaya or Mario J. Molina. Last debates on the matter resulted in the wording seen at Mike Myers Andrew Grove and Frank Gehry that are factually correct with no undue weight to citizenships over nationally.--Moxy 🍁 06:16, 5 December 2019 (UTC)
I had no involvement in those previous discussions. I am just going by MOS:CONTEXTBIO. If other nationalities are relevant to mention in the lead, I don't see why it should be expressed in a contorted way such as "Canadian-born U.S. citizen actor". As I said, the "Canadian-American actor" wording is also used by the source you mentioned in the edit summary, so I still do not see the rationale for the reversion. Hrodvarsson (talk) 04:29, 6 December 2019 (UTC)

Moxy - I'm not sure why you're claiming that it's "hard to deal with Americans that don't understand what this means", in reference to his nationality. I'm from Canada. I'm not American. So why can't we describe him as being "Canadian-American"? As Hrodvarsson pointed out it's not going against any Wikipedia rules AFAIK, he has dual citizenship and he still identifies himself as being Canadian (as pointed out in the sources in the second paragraph below). Also, shouldn't there be a WP:RFC to see what other users feel his lede should say (either Canadian, Canadian-born American or Canadian-American or whatever else users want)? As it stands, I see no WP:Consensus reached on what his lede sentence should say unless you can point it out. The archives for his talk page don't seem to show any resolved conclusion either.

He has been described as being Canadian-American before: "The Canadian-American actor", and several sources state he has dual citizenship (EDIT: The Hollywood Reporter says he became a U.S citizen in 2000): [1][2]. Even if he has been more notable in America and currently resides there, [3], as well as saying, when asked in a NYT interview about any plans of ever moving back to Canada [4]: "I built a life here and became a citizen so I could vote,” he said. “And now I want to be here to help fix what’s going on. There’s a cleansing happening. Things are going to get better," he still describes himself as being "Canadian" [5]: "There's something I have about being Canadian — there's a distance it gives you when you live in the States and operate in American culture. You approach familiar things a different way; you come at it from a different angle. It's a trait that runs through a lot Canadian artists' work and actors' work and musicians' — that kind of special remove." And here [6] Here's an archive in case: Fox is a dual citizen but still identifies strongly as a Canadian ... "I became an American citizen … mostly because I had children and I wanted to vote and I wanted to have a say in what's going on, which as you can see is very crucial right now," he said. "But … let's put it in these terms: When I watch hockey and it's Canada against the U.S., it's no question – I'm cheering for Canada. I have the red and white on. And my references are all Canadian and my influences are all Canadian, so I think of myself as Canadian first." Clear Looking Glass (talk) 00:25, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

Since a subjects nationality in the lede is based on a case by base basis, I think I'll do a RfC to get other opinions. Also, I've replied to your discussion and I'm not sure you can set a standard for Canadians who also have American citizenship. There's already countless debates and discussion about many notable people who have multiple citizenship. Clear Looking Glass (talk) 05:27, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

At some point all we can do is hope that in the future ediotrs have a better understanding of what the terms mean. As seen below for some odd reason people equate citizenship and nationality as the same. Luckily this guy doesn't hold for 5 citizenships.
Yeah, the condescending strawman subposts you are making are not getting you anywhere given MOS:CONTEXTBIO. I understand the difference between the two, and I believe citizenship should be given greater weight than nationality under that guideline. Morbidthoughts (talk) 10:37, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
This lead sentence is not a record of Fox's nationality or citizenship. It is an introduction to an encyclopaedia article that needs to introduce the subject succinctly in terms that the lay reader best understands. Discussion about how he came about to have Canadian/American citizenship or nationality, or the difference between them (if really necessary), is best left to the article body. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 12:46, 5 March 2021 (UTC)

How should the lede sentence refer to Michael J. Fox? Recently, there has been debate on what his lede should say, and I thought I'd get more opinions on this. Fox was born and raised in Canada, has dual Canadian and American citizenship, becoming a U.S citizen in 2000, and has been described as being "Canadian-American". Fox still "strongly identifies" as being Canadian, but has acknowledged also having American citizenship (he's used it to vote) and currently resides in the United States.

  • 1 as first choice, though 3 would also be acceptable. Option 2 is simply inaccurate. Option 1 is the most common usage (i.e., is normal English). While the form of this is also used for ethno-national labels ("African[-]American", etc.), it is not ambiguous in a case like this because "Canadian" is not an ethnicity. Option 3 is technically also correct, but is pedantic hair-splitting about legalisms, and isn't how this is normally expressed.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  21:04, 21 March 2021 (UTC)

First rose to prominence...

The article states that he first rose to prominence in "Family Ties". Could it be that he first rose to prominence in the US in "Family Ties", and in the rest of the world in "Back to the Future!"? Francis Hannaway (talk) 11:09, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

Years Active

Should his years active not be shifted to 2023? Obviously he retired in 2020, however he did voice acting for Back Home Again in 2021 and just released his documentary Still: A Michael J.Fox Movie in 2023. I'd argue that he's still actively acting in some capacity? Lyeuhm (talk) 00:39, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
