'mulatto' and 'black'
editThe terms 'mulatto' and 'black' are both considered offensive by some. 'Mulatto' is derived from a Spanish word for 'mule' and originated as a 'pedigree' term amongst slave-traders. 'Black' has sometimes been assigned negative connotations and is objected to by some of those it is applied to. That said, both are also sometimes used without offense being taken. Why not use 'African American' since it's the term currently accepted as 'non-offensive' and the man actually is an American of (partially) African ancestry? --CBD ✉ 13:57, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
- Despite his light skin and eyes, both of Ealy's parents are African Americans (both of his parents have browner skin than he). Ealy is not a mulatto, and should not be addressed as being such. --FuriousFreddy 18:17, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
- Well because he has blue eyes, he obviously has some european ancestors. Pindle
- That's a misconception. There's such a thing called "variation" within every population. One doesn't need to be of European ancestry to have blue eyes; for example, Aborigines commonly are born with blond hair. You shouldn't so quick to assume.
- Well because he has blue eyes, he obviously has some european ancestors. Pindle
The average black American has 20% European ancestry.
U guys can be such idiots sometimes, esp. the first two guys, the first one being gay. I can tell. Also African-american is not a real term since everybody is an african amaerican considering thats where the first human was found.70.185.125.101 00:06, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not African American - I'm not American. 'Black' in the standard term used in the UK, or perhaps Black British, certainly not Black Britain. Any term used for a group of people based on skin color is going to be considered offensive eventually, thats why we continually have to change what is PC as each term becomes less acceptable to those who are being grouped together. Either way, thats its irrelevant here. EAi 00:28, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

High School Alma Mater

His son (Redacted)
editMichael Ealy has shared his son's name. It is sourced from radio and tv and print articles. I see no reason that it cannot be included. Kids names are in articles Sara Gilbert Madonna Meryl Streep and more. NO reason this article is different. 173.66.63.102 (talk) 06:19, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
- For one reason, WP:CONSENSUS has thus far been against the addition in this content dispute, with multiple editors reverting you. For another, you were already warned about WP:3RR.
- As to the content, WP:BLPNAME does apply. Regardless of other article contents, editorial discretion is applied on a case-by-case basis - and there appears to be no consensus as yet that the information is relevant to a reader's complete understanding of the subject; and names of family members who are not also notable public figures will add very little if anything to an encyclopedic understanding of the subject in this article. --- Barek (talk • contribs) - 14:23, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
- Exactly as Barek has noted above and as I have explained on your talk page.--Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 17:42, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
Hello again. I am here asking for the link to where the consensus was against his son's name (Redacted) being included in his biography. The wpblp says it may be included, so why not include it? Is it for Michael specifically and only that you do not want his son (Redacted) to be named here? Or all of the encyclopedia? I can give many examples of children on their parents article page. Is there a minimum age for the name to be included ? I ask because someone wrote that I was crazy/stupid for wanting a 2 yr old to be included here. Kristen Cavallari gave birth on (Redacted) already that child, a girl named (Redacted) is in her biography. 173.66.63.102 (talk) 03:44, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
- I and others have already explained this to you - however I will repeat it here so as to place it on this centralized discussion rather than on our user talk pages.
- WP:BLPNAME is specifically phrased to state names of non-notable close family members "may" be included when sourced - it doesn't say they "must" nor even "should". It also specifically states "subject to editorial discretion that such information is relevant to a reader's complete understanding of the subject" - so even when sourced, community consensus still holds sway on the material being appropriate to add into the article.
- As to consensus, you appear to have a fundamental misunderstanding of how it works. You should read WP:CONSENSUS to see how it works on Wikipedia.
- As both JamesBWatson and myself explained on your talk page and as explained at WP:CONSENSUS, consensus can be established either through discussion, or through edits. As you said, all other editors had reverted your addition (7 different established editors have reverted your 8 attempts to add it) - that itself establishes the consensus through the edits. --- Barek (talk • contribs) - 04:28, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
Hello, yes it does say may. So why not include it? I am for it, you are against it. How do we get consensus?173.66.63.102 (talk) 02:54, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
- We have consensus. Seven established editors have reverted your attempt to add variations of the content. By the way, BLPNAME applies to all pages, not just the article. Restore the name to this talk page one more time, and you will be blocked for continued disruption. --- Barek (talk • contribs) - 03:29, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
That is not consensus. You have not given a reason for it to not be included. We have a differnece of opion. First you said it had to be sourced. I gave a source. Next you said it had to be a legit source. I gave that. You atill were against it. I gave other examples, you said too bad. The 7 established editors are just 7, what do the senior people think, those who set policy? As I gave examples of articles with kids names and birthdays that are accepted so obviously there are others who do accept that information. You told me to read wpblp. I did. The info is sourced and factual and neccesary for the article to be a full representation of the article subject. Still waiting for that link. 173.66.63.102 (talk) 04:27, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
- You continue to have a fundamental misunderstanding of WP:CONSENSUS. --- Barek (talk • contribs) - 04:35, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
- Allow me to add to the consensus per WP:DOB and WP:BLPNAME. And then there's WP:COMMONSENSE. -- WV ● ✉ ✓ 04:54, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
