Arabic Name

Does anyone know where the Arabic name came from (قالونيا)? I think this may be an error, and am thinking that it should be al-Qastal or the Arabic spelling of Mevasseret Zion... I'd be interested to hear what people think... AWN AWN2 02:26, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

The Arabic name given here is the name of the Arab village of Colonya, which was ruined in the 1948 war, to be replace by Mevaseret Zion. However, although the article states that Colonya was the only Arab village there, and that the mukhtar's house was int the Qastel, as far as I am aware there were two villages - Colonya, where Mevaseret Yerushalaim was built, and al-Qastel, where Maoz Zion was built. 80.179.196.239 (talk) 16:19, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

You don't have an Arabic name for Mevasseret as you don't have one for, say, Tel Aviv. Mevasseret is much larger than any pre-1948 Arab village or town in the area, and more importantly, its core does not overlap with any of those. Sharing SOME territory outside the core settlement is not a good base for saying "Israeli X corresponds/is the same as pre-48 Arab Y". Alleged Water Tower

As far as i know the water tower in the picture is not a water tower but a monument as can be seen in the following link: http://www.zmz.co.il/printarticle.aspx?id=942

mevasseret zion or mevasseret ziyyon?

I live in mevassere and there called in english mevasseret ziyyon and not mevassert zion'. --Roy551 (talk) 10:20, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

History

The history section is somewhat confused by the large area covered by this suburb. In the period up to 1948 there were three relevant population centers. El Qastal was a small Arab village located where the Crusader castle once stood, now the national park. Two kilometers to the east was the much larger Arab village of Qaluniya. Its center was where the road Sorek doubles back on itself. I don't know if that is within the boundaries of Mevaseret Zion. Motsa was spread out to the south-west of Qaluniya and was Jewish. I guess Motsa's pre-1948 location is not part of Mevaseret Zion. Zero^talk 01:35, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

WRONG TITLE, it's Mevasseret

There are SOME, if not many firm rules of Hebrew-English transliteration, and a single "S" is always read "Z", only double-S is read "S". Nobody ever advocated Latin pronunciation for modern Israeli place names. As it is now, the WP article is about a non-existant MEVAZERET. One cannot deny all rules of orthography, Zion is already problematic enough, only German reads Z as TZ/TS. That ridiculous official "Ziyyon" can be discarded, I won't argue for "Tzion" or "Tsion" with or w/o an extra Y either ("Tziyon", "Tsiyon"), because there is such a thing as a habit becoming normative, and for many decades (in late 19th-century Ottoman & Mandate Palestine and early State of Israel) the German orthography was accepted as one valid standard for Hebrew names, so "Zion" can be read "Tzion".
