This article defines a metropolis as the diocese of a metropolitan bishop, while that article defines a metropolitan bishop as the bishop of a metropolis. Both mention the nature of a metropolis as, respectively, an important city in a province or "as the chief city of a historical Roman province, ecclesiastical province, or regional capital"; this article should include a description like this as its definition, no? I'd change it myself but I'm not sure of the details and don't want to miswrite the definition. —Largo Plazo (talk) 15:31, 6 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I can only say this for the Latin Rite: "Metropolitan" is what the head of a "province" is called. The article Metropolitan bishop explains it all.
