I was confused by the fact that looking for freebase on wikipedia, and its not here! I think metaweb-freebase deserves its own article. Btw, freebase seems to be what Wikipedia should have already been! Wikipedia + Semantic mediawiki + nice webdesign = freebase :) Sandos (talk) 12:11, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Just so everyone knows, I work for Metaweb, so I'm self-policing my edits here (just the facts). That said, I think Tim O'Reilly had a very informative writeup of Freebase, and it included screenshots of the application. If anyone wants to add the link, I think it would make the article better. Same goes for the NY Times writeup William posted above. There's also a newer writeup in the Times by John Markoff. --Zippy 06:21, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

Metaweb as a shorthand for Metaweb Technologies Inc

Hi. IMHO it's clearly NPOV for the Metaweb article to be exclusively about Metaweb Technologies Inc and written primarily by people related to Metaweb Technologies Inc., particularly since the term was in use before the corporation was founded (as were most "meta-" prefix terms). So I've moved the content to Metaweb Technologies and set metaweb to be the disambiguation content, as is good and proper. --Treekids 18:14, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

This seems unnecessary to me. "Various schemes to organize the world wide web into a more coherent structure" seems inaccurate: what are some examples of other semantic web schemes also called Metaweb? I can find some blog posts where the term is used, but there's nothing discrete and coherent that a Wikipedia article could be written about. The Neal Stephenson Metaweb site was actually created by Neal Stephenson together with Applied Minds (which later spun off into Metaweb Technologies), so in a sense Freebase is a direct spiritual descendant of that website. I think it would be better to talk about that history in the existing Metaweb/Freebase article, rather than on a separate disambiguation page which doesn't wikilink anywhere else. --Bungopolis 18:47, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

I agree with Bungopolis - this disambiguation page is not necessary. The first description of metaweb is unnecessary - anyone with a dictionary can understand what meta-anything means. Making a disambiguation page to distinguish between metaweb and Metaweb Technologies, when metaweb clearly isn't a developed concept with citations, history, etc would be analogous to creating meta-pages about all of the content on wikipedia. Also, if Bungopolis is correct about the Neal Stephenson website, there is no reason to link to that as well. It should instead be listed on the Metaweb page under history. See archive.org for an account of why the Stephenson Metaweb closed down, and the connections to Applied Minds, etc. Also, I did find a small thesis project from an undergraduate student at FernUniversität Hagen (http://www.metaweb-project.net/), but it doesn't seem to be notable enough to warrant a Wikipedia article? -- Bungopolis 19:53, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

If there are any questions about the older Metaweb site, it was an experimental site I helped build (along with volunteers and some Applied Minds staff) for an idea Danny Hillis and Neal Stephenson had. I invited the Internet Archive to do a full crawl of the site before we closed it down (in late 2005, I believe). You'll probably see a more interesting site if you look at the Archive links from around 2004, when it was most active. By the way, in the last year or so of the site we renamed it the Quicksilver Wiki in order to reduce confusion between it and Metaweb.com, and also to reflect that what we had originally intended as a more general site developed to be more focused on Neal Stephenson's books. --Zippy (talk) 23:57, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

What I primarily object to here, and it seems that you've done the same thing with the freebase article, is that the edit histories are no longer connected to the right articles. Unfortunately, the Metaweb Technologies page contains no information on Metaweb (the technology and API), let alone on the Metaweb Query API, the Metaweb Query Language (MQL), etc. I don't really care whether this information resides in the same or separate pages, but it should be available somewhere.

The page "Developing Metaweb-Enabled Web Applications" (http://www.freebase.com/view/documentation/) contains a great deal of information on these topics. It is copyrighted by Metaweb Technologies, but I suspect that they would be gracious about use of the information in WP. -- RichMorin 00:33, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

I'm being bold and moving this article back to "Metaweb". This is the name commonly used for the company (as far as I can see, 'Metaweb Technologies' is the less commonly used form), and I am unaware of any other notable sites, products, etc using this name. We can always create a disambiguation page under the entry 'Metaweb' if there are future notable sites/products/etc using the name. (nb: I'm not a Metaweb employee now, I'm just generally in favor of using the common name as the article name when there are no real collisions). --Zippy (talk) 00:02, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
