I write because of the attribution of the Merk to the 16th/17th century.
I am very much not competent to act as scholar on this issue - I do however notice a derivation from the early 14th Century.
Nigel Tranter's second book of "The Bruce Trilogy" is called "The Path of the Hero King", and it contains constant references to the "merk" as currency.
The book covers the period 1307-1314. It was published in 1970.
My paperback edition dates from 1996, and lists 33 other books, including two other trilogies, written by Tranter.
I do not know Mr Tranter. He would certainly not remember me, but I remember him from school. He was and hopefully still is a few years older than I am. I guess his current age as 67/68.
