Talk:Memorial University of Newfoundland

Requested move (again) edit

The university is now either "Memorial University" (for most purposes) or "Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador" (see https://gazette.mun.ca/campus-and-community/whats-in-a-name-a-lot/). So I would recommend making the move first suggested in 2006 and changing the descriptive text accordingly. Can this be done without breaking links?

  • Oppose. The university's name is still Memorial University of Newfoundland. Regards, Rodney Boyd 17:08, 1 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. MUN's own website still calls it "Memorial University of Newfoundland." --SigPig 19:08, 1 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose for now per Rodney Boyd. Note that if the shorter version catches on, WP:NAME may require the shorter, "more common" name be used. But that discussion is at least a year down the road. — stickguy (:^›)— || talk || 12:03, 2 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Support as nom. See "Discussion" for results of google searches. Maxberners 21:43, 5 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. Per http://www.mun.ca/marcomm/brand/, the legal name of the university is still Memorial University of Newfoundland. Note also the copyright notice on the home page and other pages. Rodney Boyd 23:27, 5 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Neutral: As I noted on the previous request, WP:COMMONNAME suggests a move may be in order - and thinking it a bit over, maybe a bit sooner than I first thought. That said, let's be clear, the legal name of the institution has not changed. — stickguy (:^›)— || talk || 22:04, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:MUN Logo.png edit

Image:MUN Logo.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:11, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

"General"? edit

What is the protocol as to whether Rick Hiller may still be referred to as "General"? Aren't retired members of the forces entitled to continue to use the rank they held upon retirement. As well the MUN Gazette was referring to the Chancellor as "Gen. Hillier" as late as the September 4/08 issue. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.162.65.22 (talk) 21:51, 22 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Promotional tone edit

Please remember that this is an encyclopedia, and language that sounds like it came out of a brochure, or that uses a lot of superlatives or sounds like corporate-speak is not appropriate for an encyclopedic article. If in doubt about whether the word choice is appropriate, consider the source: if it's only, or mostly, from university sources, or sources connected with the university, and cannot be found in independent, secondary, reliable sources, then it is probably not appropriate for the article. Mathglot (talk) 18:25, 5 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Most of this has now been fixed. I've also done some re-org of the section sequencing and hierarchy, and consolidated like content with like. Hopefully the article is easier to read, now. I'll leave the PROMO tag up for a while, so other editors can have a chance to look it over, and see what they think.
Please maintain a neutral, encyclopedic tone when editing this article, and base assertions on verifiable content from reliable sources, preferably not from a source connected with the university. If you, as an editor, have a professional or personal relationship with the University, consider not editing the article directly. Instead, disclose your connection, and make comments here on the Talk page about what changes you'd like to see to the article, allowing discussion to take place to see if there's a consensus, and another editor make the actual changes. See the Conflict of interest guideline for details. Mathglot (talk) 22:34, 5 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
