Skolkovo edit

It appears that the article on Skolkovo already exists for some time, but is called the Russian Silicon Valley. What do you think about renaming it into the Skolkovo innovation center (that corresponds to the titles of Russian and German wiki articles)?

Yes, I think it should be renamed. Offliner (talk) 15:21, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, the move has been done. Perhaps it should better be Skolkovo (innovation center) or Innovation center in Skolkovo, let the others decide; Skolkovo innovation center seems to be good for now. GreyHood Talk 15:28, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Structure of the article edit

I propose the following:

  • Intro
  • Announcement
    • Background (here may go the brief description of the reasons why economy needs modernisation)
    • Medvedev's election campaign (he made certain important speeches related to modernization during the election campaign and the initial period of his presidency; some quotes from Putin may be useful too, btw)
    • Go, Russia!
    • Quotes
  • Program structure (I try to give the most close translation of the Russian names of the modernisation areas as formulated at the official site; also I think that "technology" is better than "technologies")
    • Efficient use of energy and resources
    • Nuclear technology
    • Computer hardware and software
    • Space technology and telecommunications
    • Medical technology and pharmaceuticals
  • Related developments
    • Modernization of industry and infrastructure
    • Fighting corruption
    • Reforms and new projects in education (things like emphasis on development of the so called "federal universities" should be mentioned here)
    • High-tech state corporations (Russian Nanotechnology Corporation and Russian Technologies)
    • Innovation centers and technoparks (here goes the info about existing centers, like that in Kazan, and planned, like Skolkovo)
  • Implementation
    • 2009
    • 2010
  • Analysis (here goes media coverage, critisism, quotes from foreign officials such as Obama and Schwarzenegger etc.)

Hope this is not too much for the beginning. Personally I'm mostly interested in work on the sections on structure and implementation, and to the lesser extent the sections on high-tech corporations and technoparks. But of course I'll try to help in development of all proposed sections. GreyHood Talk 16:06, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

This sounds perfect. Offliner (talk) 16:10, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'll start to make some additions right onto the article page, OK? I think that we should translate some key info about the five modernization areas from the official site, I'll try to do it. Later I'll also try to find some early 2007-2009 statements on modernization by Medvedev and Putin. GreyHood Talk 16:22, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Sure, thanks. Offliner (talk) 16:28, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

GLONASS edit

I've put an image of availability of GLONASS in March 2010. But that was before the three last satellites were launched in September, when their number reached 24. Does this mean that actually GLONASS navigation availability is now 100% in all locations on Earth? Perhaps the images as of March 30 should be removed from all articles or somehow updated if there is any sense in updating them? GreyHood Talk 15:54, 24 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Also, what other images can we use instead of GLONASS coverage? These are two photos from ru wiki article:

Russia NHDR 2010 edit

This UN report may be a good source for the article. GreyHood Talk 13:39, 29 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Titanium Valley edit

"Titanium Valley" special economic zone to be created in the Urals Federal District.[1][2] Perhaps this belongs here, or even deserves its own article? Offliner (talk) 16:29, 19 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I think this article should have some account of special economic zones, and the article on Titanium Valley is definitely needed. By the way, while there are many articles about oil and gas projects in Russia, there are too few on other industry and on high-tech, while there are many interesting developments. For example, currently there is a boom in production of pipes in Russia, and pretty much high-level factories are built - here are the images of one in Chelyabinsk. Btw, I've added the Titanium Valley on my ToDo list yesterday. You may have some interest in other underdeveloped or missing articles there (the "Modern" section), and I won't object if you or someone else creates those missing articles. GreyHood Talk 18:46, 19 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
I've created Titanium Valley. I hope to expand it in the next 5 days and get it to DYK. Offliner (talk) 19:44, 20 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Good! There is a Russian company, called Microbor Nanotech, which makes some of the best cutting tools in the world and has a growing share in the world market, especially in China and Russia. The tools for cutting titanium for aircraft industry are among their projects for the next year. This may be eventually linked to the Titanium Valley. GreyHood Talk 20:03, 20 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Those pipe plant pictures look great. I wonder if it would be possible to get Creative Commons permission for these pictures somehow? In general, pictures like that would enormously benefit Russian economy -related articles. I've tried requesting permissions from some companies, but it looks like the formal request tends to scare them off. Offliner (talk) 12:00, 27 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
The link to the pipe plant images given above is a blog, where the blog author seems to have taken all the pictures himself. Russian bloggers have plenty of interesting images - may be there is some point in asking persons, rather than organisations, to get permission for their pictures? Also, when there is no pictures in an article at all, there is a possibility of WP:FAIR USE for at least one picture per article. GreyHood Talk 12:12, 27 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
By the way, I hope you know the SkyscraperCity forum and its [http://www.skyscrapercity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=345 Russian subforum] (most people there seem to be able to speak English). Tons of cool images, many projects in housing, infrastructure and industry are being monitored. GreyHood Talk 19:50, 27 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

"We are absolutely sure that, without urgent modernization, the Russian economy has no future, even with the enormous natural resources Russia has." —Dmitry Medvedev in a televised speech on 24 December 2009.

Better to say "We are absolutely sure that, without urgent modernization, the Russian economy has no future, BECAUSE OF the enormous natural resources Russia has." Azamat Abdoullaev —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.228.42.75 (talk) 12:06, 25 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
