Proposed Changes

We are planning to add more sections to this article. We want to expand on some of the history behind media consumption, and discuss the negative and positive impacts of it. We are also planning to talk about the people who were crucial in the processes of developing media. Peer Feedback

The lead to this article is easily understandable. The group has done a nice job of introducing what “media consumption” is in simple terms and mentioning the key points without giving too much detail. However, since the principles of being an active media consumer were included in the lead, it would have been nice if the group expanded on those principles later in the article since the lead is supposed to act as a summary. In addition, I think that the group should take a second look at their grammar and punctuation use throughout the article. The group’s structure is very clear and the headings that they chose seem to capture and organize the necessary information very well. The group balanced the article very well; every subject is well addressed and about the same length. They kept this article neutral but including both positive and negative effects of media consumption. This article does refer to “some,” “many,” and other unnamed, generalized groups; however, this is a quick fix since it occurred less than ten times. This article did a really great job in giving a lead summary of media consumption as it concisely explained what it is so readers could easily understand right when viewing the article. Also, this article was very well organized with its subtitles and the order in which it was presented so that readers could easily view a desired section. In addition to this, the article also presented various facts backed up by references that were included after a fact was presented. However, this was not always the case. This group could improve by making sure that the wording of facts or information is not intended to be persuasive. For example, instead of saying that “media consumption is reaching a younger and younger age group,” it would be more beneficial for this type of article to present a statistic showing the truth of this statement. Overall, this article effectively communicated the main points of media consumption and those who are researching the topic, I believe, would greatly benefit from reading this article. The history of media consumption was very drawn out and informative. Starting with the photograph and then transitioning to film and tv and then to social media painted a great picture for the reader. The increase in media consumption headline really captures where media consumption is going and how it has changed. Having a different tab for positive and negative effects is also very helpful for the reader. Changes I would make to this Wikipedia page would be combining the history and people involved headlines because in the people involved headline they just talk more about the history. A second change I would put in would just be to break up the long texts into smaller paragraphs, it will be easier for the reader to follow and make for a better Wikipedia page. Acimino: I looked at the additions that you made to the "Media consumption" article. Great job so far! I like the sentence you added on the Rosetta Stone to the Positive Effects section. The citation that you added needs to be formatted correctly. You can do this by using the citation tool in Wikipedia and adding the information from the article, such as author names, journal name, date, and volume & issue number (if applicable). I noticed that you made a few revisions to parts of the article, including adding apostrophes to a few words such as "iPods" and 1990s". These words actually do not have apostrophes. I went ahead and removed them, but continue to keep your eye out for possible revisions on this page throughout the semester.

The positive effects section is a good one to start with for the next part where you will conduct research on an aspect of Media Consumption and add content to the article. My suggestion is that perhaps you focus on one aspect of the Positive Effects of Media Consumption, such as video games, T.V., or the internet and look for resources that address one of these topics. From there you can work on writing a draft that delves more into the topic you choose and use resources for support in your sandbox that will be added to your sandbox later.

Next, you can work on adding some more content to this section using the article that you found. Also, do a search on the "Positive Effects" of "media consumption" in the library databases and see if you can find one or two more articles that you can use as well.

Some questions that you could consider and attempt to answer: - How does mass media socialize adolescents? - In what ways does it help them to understand "social norms"?

Keep up the good work with the article. If you want, you can also delve into another section in your research and writing, such as the "Increase" or "negative effects" sections.

Com course article critique

I think the article for the most part is really good and informative but i also think the article could use some updated sources and information. when it comes to topics like media and media consumption there is always new and updated information and it should be updated more frequently. i also don't think they speak enough about the negative effects because the negative effects are just as significant relating to this topic.

I think this a great article. I don't have much to say, but I do think that the people involved and the increase section should be updated. Abad's Article Critique for Mass comm

After reviewing the article I found it very informing but I noticed that minimal links lead to pages that seemed borderline on credibility. I found the section of semiotics of American youth and media consumption interesting, however I think this should expand into other age groups as well instead of just focusing at such a specific group. With this also in mind the positive and negative effects seemed limited in scope and narrowed itself into the focus once again on the adolescent age group. Thus I felt it was a bit biased to media consumption natives (those who were born in the media consumption era) instead of also taking the aspect of media consumption for immigrants (those who are learning how to utilize newly unfolding media). This touches on the fact that the article started out neutral, stayed mostly neutral but it's focus shifted and started changing to look at media consumption and American youth. Therefore, I felt the wider aspect of media consumption on a greater neutral scale was lost and underrepresented. Also some of the linked material is a bit dated and should more than likely be updated. Also the negative aspects of media consumption felt highly overlooked.

Article contribution ideas for Mass Comm article project

I plan on contributing to the article by possibly expanding on the positive and negative effects of media consumption beyond the current given scope, I suppose refocus it on the general population instead of focusing on teenagers. On that note I would also like to contribute to the article by expanding the article in other areas such as how media consumption is being linked to eating disorder, or the ethnography of media consumption, as well as the impact of media consumption on personal views. I have a few ideas but in the end I may chose to focus on one particular topic instead of expand into so many.

Hi Arios179 : This is a good list of sources, although it's quite broad with sources on the topic from many different perspectives: transnational media consumption, attitudes towards crime and justice, media consumption and eating disorders, the ethnography of media consumption, and media effects theory and research. I would suggest that you choose one of these sources, perhaps Dowler "Media consumption and public attitudes toward crime and justice", as you mention that you would like to focus on this topic and create a section on the effects on public attitudes towards law enforcement. Make sure to read this source thoroughly and then write the section as a fact-based description using this source without giving your own opinion. You should also find one or two other journal articles on the topic of "media consumption" and "attitudes towards crime" that you can use as well so that you're not writing the entire section using only one source.
