Photo choice

Surely a good image of an actual specimen is far preferable to a drawing? ... ThorpeStephen (talk) 00:05, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

Not necessarily. A good drawing is better than a bad photograph, Helmore's drawings are very good, and most of the Mecodema photos in Commons are not great. I prefer good biological illustration in general to most specimen photographs, which don't illustrate key features especially well. We commonly use paintings over photos in WP bird articles. But whatever, if you have a better generic photo for Mecodema, change it back. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 00:25, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

I did say a 'good image'. I agree that a good drawing is better than a bad photograph, but I wasn't suggesting that we use a bad photo. I think we need to consider the purpose of a taxobox photo: is it (1) to give people a good general idea of what the taxon actually looks like; or (2) to show all taxonomically relevant characters? I suggest that the answer is (1), but I'll leave it up to others to make the choice ... ThorpeStephen (talk) 01:34, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
