Colleywobbles

The Colleywobbles is the entrenched meanders on the Mbhashe River, in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It is named after General Sir George Pomeroy Colley, 1835-1881 who surveyed the area in 1858 when he was the magistrate at Idutywa. He later died at Majuba, KwaZullu-Natal in the 1st Boer War (Butler 1899). The historic precedence for the use of this locality name is the 1884 map "Plan of the Territories formerly known as Kaffrariaproper" which was compiled from plans and surveys by 14 surveyors and military sketches by Messrs Colley and Grant and the intelligence branch of the Quarter Master General". A copy of that map is on display in the public galleries of the Amathole Museum in KingWilliamsTown.

The name does not appear on the 1:50,000 topographical map 3228BA Badi. The Survey General of South Africa in Mowbray, Cape Town has been informed of the omission and responded stating that it will appear on subsequent official maps. The trading station adjacent to the Colleywobbles was named Collywobbles (Thompson 2012). The trading station no longer operates and the building are in ruins. That name spelt without the first of the two "e"s has come into general use, obscuring the original spelling of Colleywobbles.

The Colleywobbles is renown for its scenery, hydro-electric power station and for the vultures that live there. The HEP station takes advantage of the sinuous nature of the entrenched meanders. At one point two stretches of the river, 30 km apart, come adjacent to each other and separated by a narrow ridge. A dam wall was built on the upstream section of the river, a tunnel bored through the ridge which leads water to a power station at the downstream section. The fall between the dam and station is over 100 m and capable of generating sufficient electricity to supply the whole of the Transkei.

The vultures Gyps coprotheres breed on the south facing cliffs and have done so for over a years. Their numbers have varied over the past 35 years (Vernon 1998) and currently there are about 200 breeding pairs.
