History edit

Peter Steelman was the first settler of the area in 1710 followed by Edmund Iliff and the town was named Iliff Town. Then in 1749, Captain George Mays bought the property from Gravely run to Babcock road and a large part of the Greater Egg Harbor River. It was then divided into two sections, the Upper and the Lower Landing. In 1880, the two were merged into one town that we know today as Mays Landing.

During the time of the Industrial Revolution, Mays Landing played an important role. The introduction of two railroad stations, it made it easier to transport goods and workers from surrounding areas of South Jersey. It didn't take very long for businesses to begin such as the glass and shoe factories, grocery and clothing stores, sawmills, barbershops, and the brickyard. The Mays Landing Water Power Company employed many locals and also had a company store that many of the townspeople purchased their daily supplies.

More and more people settled in downtown Mays Landing and along the outskirts of the area. Schools, churches, housing, and additional shops were added to keep up with the population growth. With that, socially more entertainment was added to the South Jersey settlement. Veal's Opera House, Leinings Park, bands, ice-skating, and small sports teams were organized and appreciated. Today, many of the descendants from the original families of Mays Landing still live in the only place they ever called home.

Lake Lenape edit

Lake Lenape is a fairly large lake in Mays Landing, New Jersey, and should be mentioned in this article, if some more facts about it can be found. --DThomsen8 (talk) 21:17, 20 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
