Omission of Matthew Avitable.

edit

After Stanley J Pac resigned in 1975 to become commissioner of motor vehicles under newly elected governor Ella Grasso, Jim Carey served out the remainder of Pac's term. The 1975 general election had Democratic nominee Matthew Avitable, a local attorney, Paul Manafort, the Republican nominee seeking a comeback after having served in the administration of Gov Tom Meskill, and Joseph Pac, brother of the former mayor and owner/operator of a lunch counter on Broad Street, running as an independent. During debates, Pac assailed his opponents as 'Pitiful Avitable' and 'Wrecker Ball' Paul, reflecting local opinion that Manafort's company specialized in demolition of buildings in the downtown district that left empty patches pf prime real estate undeveloped for years. Avitable won a landslide victory, but lost the democratic primary two years later in a 5 person race won by William J McNamara by 17 votes. PeterInPA (talk) 19:36, 15 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
