Word Change edit

Changed the word "virtuosos" to "virtuosi," which is the grammatically correct and proper usage of the plural for the Italian term. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.41.55.88 (talk) 19:33, 24 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'm glad to see an article about Giuliani, and such a detailed one too. But surely an article should not consist of a giant single paragraph?

Date Error for Mauro Giuliani edit

The date of death is listed at the top as 1828, but as 1829 at the end of the article.

Changed it.

Composer project review edit

I've reviewed this article as part of the Composers project review of its B-class articles. This article is clearly B-class, but it is full of peacock language that needs elaboration or citation. It is also deficient in his early years (or the deficiency should be cited with reference to one the listed biographical sources). I have more comments; read the full review on the comments page. Questions or comments can be left here or on my talk page. Magic♪piano 15:39, 11 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

this is a weak article. edit

Sorry for the irrascible tone in my comments, I don't want to make this sound like YouTube, but really i'm losing patience with the quality of some articles. I am not the Giuliani expert, and I'm glad that someone is interested in providing info. But please do a thorough job. There are so many throwaway lines, and a lack of solid info. "He had a remarkable ability to weave a melody into a passage with musical effect while remaining true to the idiom of the instrument." What exactly is that supposed to mean? Or is it another way of saying he was a composer? Of course if we remove it then we're left with one lonely little sentence: "he was fond of the theme and variatios form." How very nice. The problem is that i don't trust Wikipedia, except for overview or introduction to a subject.PJinBoston (talk) 20:11, 8 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

"In 1819 Giuliani left Vienna, mainly for financial reasons: his property and bank accounts were confiscated to pay his creditors." edit

There is not a single source to verify the claim that "his property and bank accounts were confiscated to pay his creditors." This is pure hogwash. He owed his tailor 660 gulden, but this guy sued countless other people, from whom he never got his money.--2001:62A:6:1:0:0:0:17 (talk) 14:40, 12 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

==Composers Project Assessment of Mauro Giuliani: 2008-12-11==

This is an assessment of article Mauro Giuliani by a member of the Composers project, according to its assessment criteria. This review was done by Magicpiano.

If an article is well-cited, the reviewer is assuming that the article reflects reasonably current scholarship, and deficiencies in the historical record that are documented in a particular area will be appropriately scored. If insufficient inline citations are present, the reviewer will assume that deficiencies in that area may be cured, and that area may be scored down.

Adherence to overall Wikipedia standards (WP:MOS, WP:WIAGA, WP:WIAFA) are the reviewer's opinion, and are not a substitute for the Wikipedia's processes for awarding Good Article or Featured Article status.

===Origins/family background/studies=== Does the article reflect what is known about the composer's background and childhood? If s/he received musical training as a child, who from, is the experience and nature of the early teachers' influences described?

  •   Little coverage; reference bibliography contains a published biographical book; lack of knowledge needs citation.

===Early career=== Does the article indicate when s/he started composing, discuss early style, success/failure? Are other pedagogic and personal influences from this time on his/her music discussed?

  •   Little coverage; reference bibliography contains a published biographical book; lack of knowledge needs citation.

===Mature career=== Does the article discuss his/her adult life and composition history? Are other pedagogic and personal influences from this time on his/her music discussed?

  •   ok

===List(s) of works=== Are lists of the composer's works in WP, linked from this article? If there are special catalogs (e.g. Köchel for Mozart, Hoboken for Haydn), are they used? If the composer has written more than 20-30 works, any exhaustive listing should be placed in a separate article.

  •   Good

===Critical appreciation=== Does the article discuss his/her style, reception by critics and the public (both during his/her life, and over time)?

  •   Contemporary popularity acknowledged; language is full of WP:PEACOCK. Legacy is implied, again by use of peacock language, but not documented through e.g. quotes from later guitar masters or later musicologists or historians.

===Illustrations and sound clips=== Does the article contain images of its subject, birthplace, gravesite or other memorials, important residences, manuscript pages, museums, etc? Does it contain samples of the composer's work (as composer and/or performer, if appropriate)? (Note that since many 20th-century works are copyrighted, it may not be possible to acquire more than brief fair use samples of those works, but efforts should be made to do so.) If an article is of high enough quality, do its images and media comply with image use policy and non-free content policy? (Adherence to these is needed for Good Article or Featured Article consideration, and is apparently a common reason for nominations being quick-failed.)

  •   One image, no sound. More images needed.

===References, sources and bibliography=== Does the article contain a suitable number of references? Does it contain sufficient inline citations? (For an article to pass Good Article nomination, every paragraph possibly excepting those in the lead, and every direct quotation, should have at least one footnote.) If appropriate, does it include Further Reading or Bibliography beyond the cited references?

  •   Article has an extensive reference list, but no inline citations. This is a significant defect, as there is much WP:PEACOCK language.

===Structure and compliance with WP:MOS=== Does the article comply with Wikipedia style and layout guidelines, especially WP:MOS, WP:LEAD, WP:LAYOUT, and possibly WP:SIZE? (Article length is not generally significant, although Featured Articles Candidates may be questioned for excessive length.)

  •   Lead is short. Article is full of uncited WP:PEACOCK statements.

===Things that may be necessary to pass a Good Article review===

  • Article requires more inline citations (WP:CITE)
  • Article lead needs work (WP:LEAD)
  • Article prose needs work (WP:MOS)
  • Article needs (more) images and/or other media (MOS:IMAGE)

===Summary=== This is a biography apparently about a significant guitar virtuoso. Much is claimed about his greatness; little is actually well-documented here. For example, in the lead we learn he is "considered by many to be one of the leading guitar virtuosos", but there is no mention of any of the "many" in the article. The article claims little is known about his early life and movements. However, these statements are uncited, and there is a biography prominently listed at the top of the reference bibliography. The whole third paragraph of the bio is WP:PEACOCK material, demanding elaboration and/or citation. (If he was really "acclaimed for his virtuosity", some examples of who did so would help.)

Some of his students in Vienna are mentioned; but those untutored in the history of guitar players know nothing of their importance or relevance.

The article is fairly well-structured. Its lead is short, and could use some bulk. The article would also benefit from more images, and sound clips if available.

Article is B-class; the prose needs work. Magic♪piano 15:30, 11 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Giuliani's Teacher edit

Biographer Nicola Giuliani states that Giuliani's first teacher was his brother in law and Neapolitan Cellist & Singer Gaetano Stefano Raffaele Lucci.
