I'm not sure if anyone is actively editing this page, but I'm going to try to spend some time translating content from the german version of the article. I've added a uk canal info box. Remains of a lock structure

What for? edit

It would be nice to see in the article a discussion of why anyone wanted such a canal. It would have been very expensive; there must have been specific gains expected. They may be obvious to experts but not to readers like me. Also, the reasons are likely to have changed with time. Zaslav (talk) 02:07, 1 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

According to the map in the area there is a lot marshland and forested land. Now there is a railway, I don't know if it was there in that period, but I guess it would have been busy and it doesn't go in the direction of Kaliningrad anyway. An alternative way to transport goods seems a reasonable explanation. Especially if the Germans wanted to expand their settlements in an area contended with the Poles. Długopole lock edit

The co-ords are given as 54.3062°N 21.4948°E, but I think they should be 54.3039°N, 21.4948°E; the former location appears to be 265 m slightly west of north from where the structure seems to be. Prisoner of Zenda (talk) 08:47, 1 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Dubious claim edit

The claim that the real purpose was to serve a secret U-boat facility may have been useful to get a nomination and attract some attention, but it does not stand. A quick survey with Marble(OpenStreetmap view) and Google satellite view is enough to verify that some of the locks were too small for the u-boats, they could not go though. Furthermore even if back then it was Prussian territory there were also ethic poles in the area. So the canal was exposed to possible espionage. WornOutCog (talk) 14:11, 1 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
