The rank of sergeant major is not an administrative position in the U.S. Marine Corps, it is a separate and distinct rank of grade E9. There is no lateral movement between the two. To reflect this, I have moved references to Sergeant Major and Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps to the sergeant major page. —Fox1 October 11, 2004

According to the entry for David W. Sommers, he was promoted to Master Sergeant, before switching tracks over to First Sergeant|. I do not know how rare this is, but it shows that such a switch is not unheard of.—MJBurrageTALK • 02:38, 18 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

E8 and E9 Billet question edit

It use to be, but not sure if it still holds true. A MSgt and MGySgt could hold a 1stSgt and SgtMaj Billet but not the other way around. Would this still be true? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.80.95.230 (talk) 14:40, 3 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
