Master vs. Lead edit

I think there's a big difference between a Master drummer and a Lead drummer. Pretty much anyone with a few years study can take the lead in an ensemble. But only people like Famoudou Konaté and Mamady Keïta are Master Drummers, people recognized by their fellow drummers to deserve the title of Master. --Spaceriqui 03:12, 23 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Here's a website that explains it better than I could. Here is a summary of what a master drummer is:

  1. A person who has devoted his whole life to the drum. It is his sole life's passion and occupation.
  2. It a title that is earned, and very much respected in the culture where it originates.
  3. A master drummer is able to play any part of any rhythm for his ethnic group and neighboring ethnic groups, in any ceremonial situation.
  4. He knows the songs and dances that go with each rhythm.
  5. To be recognised as a Master drummer, you need to have worked under the continuous supervision of a Master drummer
  6. It is a status passed down from one master to another.

In summary, you have to know and play everything. It has nothing to do with being the lead drummer.

I think this page needs improvement. --94.1.136.60 (talk) 22:19, 18 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Kamande drummer edit

I don't think the remark about the Kamande drummer is appropriate for this page because it is completely out of context. It might be better to create a separate page for that and have a disambiguation page. --MichiHenning (talk) 06:14, 6 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
