Two random paragraphs

The second and third paragraphs on this page don't really belong in the introduction. The second paragraph seems to fit better under the US Navy heading and the 3rd paragraph could have its own heading such as Mercahant Navy or similar. Gaia Octavia Agrippa ^Talk | _Sign 18:24, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Improvements

I think there are a number of improvements this article needs:

• A dedicated history section
• A section explaining its current use, or lack of
• Sub-headings to break up the larger sections into readable portions

• • Thanks for the comments - I think it would help if there were some kind of "Naval rank/rating sectioning" template because there's some common themes about each rank, such as history, duties, promotion path, education and training and which countries use rank X and what do other countries call rank X.
