i feel that the neutrality of this article is disputed......this article alleges of many wrongdoings by russian forces but hardly cites its sources....Gprince007 16:10, 24 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Over 3,000 unidentified bodies - official

Human remains in mass graves should be identified - Chechen ombudsman

GROZNY July 3 (Interfax) - The unidentified remains of over 3,000 people who died between 2000 and 2004, have been buried in mass graves in Chechnya, the Chechen presidential press service reported, citing Chechen ombudsman Nurdi Nukhazhiyev.

"According to the Chechen Emergency Situations' Ministry, 1,138 bodies were buried between 2000 and 2001 alone. This is without taking into account the following three years. Our assumption is that the remains of over 3,000 people have been buried in mass graves in Chechnya. Among them, certainly there are those who are on the list of missing and kidnaped people," Nukhazhiyev was quoted as saying by the press service.

As early as 2005, the Council of Europe officially announced its intention to assist in opening a laboratory to exhume and identify the bodies, the ombudsman said.

"But although the Chechen government has provided the premises, the issue remains unresolved," Nukhazhiyev said.

"There are both civilian and military mass graves in Chechnya. It is impossible to identify and rebury them without a laboratory," he said.

Rename this article?

edit

Maybe we should rename this article to "Mass graves of the Chechen Wars".

Some mass graves might still be from the first war. There have been mass graves uncovered from the first war for sure, like here: [1]
